Hexagonal Architecture and UMF3 for Interoperability

On 17 October 2019, the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale
IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA) hosted its 11th Industry
Roundtable “Towards Practical Implementation of the New JHA Information Architecture” in
Tallinn, Estonia. The event was dedicated to discussing solutions for the implementation of the new
interoperability architecture that are aligned with legal, functional and technical requirements. The
running theme of the roundtable, as set by the Executive Director in his introductory speech, was that
it is now the right time to move from theoretical discussions and focus on discussing the challenges
of the practical implementation of the new information architecture.

Biographic Matching & UMF Standards for High Quality Interoperability

Through three single afternoon sessions, the event addressed some of the challenges that the new information architecture will face in order to reach both political objectives and operational benefits, in particular the quality of the data.

Followed by more than 320 participants from all over the world, the event offered an opportunity for the industry to present solutions to address the capability gaps present at Central System and Member States level (quality of alphanumeric and biometric data), and in particular for the future use cases (like capturing quality biometric data in non-optimal conditions).

High quality for both alphanumeric and biometric data needs to be ensured at the moment of insertion/acquisition, also in case of not optimal environmental conditions (e.g. moving trains). Additional work on the development, endorsement and implementation of common standards is necessary throughout the data management process: from data acquisition to access to information (includin
