"Living the Dream" Bio

Who am I?

I'm a kid from the hood who was always in trouble for whistling, making "BEATS" and talking all the time. But, little did I know that talking was my super power and that music in my head was my inner-self telling me I was gifted in music.

After being inspired by my first Black male teacher, I entered band and it changed everything. Able to play eight instruments without reading music and eventually learning how to read music, I got a band scholarship to the only HBCU in Oklahoma, Langston University.

Instead of becoming a band teacher, I wanted to be an elementary teacher, because I wanted to inspire the next generation of students who loved making beats, whistling and talking. 20 years later, I now get the opportunity to talk for a living and inspire others with music, media, discussions AND talking? I'm truly living my wildest dreams!

Your students, staff, faculty and participants can live the dream too.

Educational "Edu-Jargon" Bio

Over the past twenty years, Andre Daughty (pronounced Daugh like how) has established himself as a highly-regarded urban educator from Oklahoma City. As an elementary school teacher, he helped to improve test scores at a low-performing school in need of improvement to state recognition. That year, he taught a class of over fifty fourth grade students by himself.

Andre enjoys sharing strategies to create and build culture within a school and organization, bringing awareness on today’s generation, understanding and developing attitudes of at-risk student populations, and motivating excellence in the classroom and school with students of color, particularly young black male students.

His engaging, yet practical style has earned him invitations as speaker in various arenas on diversity, building the culture, leadership and more.

He delivers timely conference and program keynotes, professional development workshops, parenting seminars and student assemblies.

FROM PRESCHOOL TO PRISON: ENGAGING TODAY’S GENERATION

Each year, millions of students walk into classrooms for the first time excited about learning and elated to start their journey of education. By their freshman year in high school, those same students dread attending school, with many dropping out. Never developing college and career ready success skills, thousands of students transition from the joys of preschool to the dejected lows of prison.

This pipeline can be conceptualized as a series of roadblocks and obstacles that hinder children, especially children of color, from academic success but funnel them into the criminal justice system.

This keynote explores where the gap originated and how schools, districts and communities are combatting the preschool to prison pipeline. It is possible to go from surviving to thriving!

WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?

This Broadway themed “Hamilton” talk based from the Broadway theatrical play, Hamilton, shares the stories of our lives and not just about our social media timelines or the resumes we create. It is about the value that comes from every experience and the lessons learned from our lives. They connect meaning to our lives and the lives of others which creates an emotional file folder for us to store the facts and experiences. Everyone has something important to say and everyone has a story that is powerful and unique. But, what happens if your story stays silent? Who is going to tell your story? Who will tell your students’ stories if their voices are silenced? There is power in your story.

The keynote explores examples of transformational stories for schools and/or organizations.

PBL ISN’T JUST FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS

Schools around the world are adopting career-oriented, project-based, technology embedded and real world ideas to education. Those spaces recognize the connections between innovative learning and creativity. However, not all schools provide opportunities where all students can shine. This talk provides context about PBL using storytelling, giving examples from classrooms, and sharing proven, effective and diverse practices for early childhood through adult learners.

To make space for PBL, we must change how educators lead and learn. This talk will inspire you to think about how we can build on the strengths, interests, and talents of our students and create better learning experiences for all. We will explore how to move toward a shared vision of teaching and learning, embrace learning as a process and not an event, and make learning public to share what you are learning and inspire others.

THE CLASSROOM STARTS WITH CULTURE!

Are your students not as engaged as you would like them to be? Could you use a few strategies to further engage your students within the classroom setting? This session provides practical ways to establish and maintain culture using energizers/brain breaks, anecdotes, examples and protocols. This is definitely not a sit and get session. Be prepared to have fun as we build culture and engage students.

THE POWER OF ONE

In one second, there are two million Google searches, seventy-two hours of video uploaded to YouTube, forty-one thousand Facebook posts, two hundred seventy-eight thousand tweets, one hundred four thousand snaps, and $83,000 worth of sales on Amazon. With over seven billion people in the world constantly connected through the Internet, there are opportunities to inspire anyone across the world. It only takes one person’s voice to make a difference in a school, neighborhood, community, city and beyond.

THE MAMBA MENTALITY

To achieve the truly elite level, one must train, study, and compete with a fervor that exceeds the status quo, and then find ways to do more. The Mamba Mentality, coined by Kobe Bryant, is all about focusing on the process, trusting in the hard work when it matters most and constantly trying to be the best version of yourself. In this keynote, we discover what the Mamba Mentality looks like for students of all ages and how to start doing more to better self and community. This is an interactive session where attendees participate through self-evaluation, discussion, planning and of course, laughter!
