Automating Deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Microsoft SQL Server

Modernizing Microsoft SQL Server releases on Red Hat operating system platforms can help you lower costs, reduce dependence on a single vendor and improve performance. This presentation begins with a bird’s eye view of how database admins (DBAs) use Red Hat solutions. Following up, we dive into Red Hat automation tools included with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for SQL Server. During that deep dive portion of the session, we’ll learn how DBAs are automating the deployment of RHEL with Microsoft SQL Server using the Red Hat Ansible Automation platform and RHEL System Roles. We’ll demonstrate of how we can deploy applications in a consistent way across bare-metal, virtual and cloud-based Linux environments. Finally, we’ll come away with an understanding of how to utilize the latest features of the SQL Server for Linux ansible role, including the most requested feature, support for easy-to-configure SQL Server Availability Groups with RHEL High Availability Add-on.

Securing SQL Server on Linux

Securing database workloads involves more than just configuring the database and a firewall, the operating system security is deeply involved. Linux has several security features that can be leveraged to protect SQL Server environments. These include features around access control, patch management, container and kubernetes privileges, identity and certificate management, and cryptography. Most SQL Server professionals don’t realize that Microsoft has built SQL Server on Linux to leverage all of these features. In this talk, we’ll dive deeper into the interaction between SQL Server security and the features of Linux and show you how to leverage Linux security to harden your database environment. We’ll demonstrate the tasks associated with setting up and managing a production environment that leverages many of these capabilities.
