Feel, Deal & Heal: Building Resilience After Loss (A 90-Day Group Intensive)

Loss is a universal experience, and grief is a natural response to any significant loss that affects you mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, professionally, socially, financially, or environmentally.

If you're struggling with loss of any kind (past or present)—such as a death, relationship estrangement, serious illness or injury, job loss, financial loss, loss of identity, loss of autonomy, violence, cultural or racial trauma, lost opportunity, institutional loss, terrorism, war, natural or manmade disaster, or other loss—this 90-day group intensive is for you.

Begin your healing journey with like-minded individuals by unpacking, finding meaning in, and transforming the adversity in your life.

Foundations of Generational Trauma

Provides fundamental knowledge of generational trauma to help participants grasp the basic concepts, nature, symptoms, and effects of trauma, and identify practical strategies to begin breaking trauma cycles in their own family.

Through the Fire: Understanding, Finding Meaning In & Coping with Trauma, Grief & Loss

Examines the concepts, nature, intersections, and effects of trauma, grief & loss. Designed to increase individuals' ability to promote self-awareness, engage introspection, extract meaning from adverse experiences, employ healthy coping strategies during crisis situations, integrate trauma, grief, and loss as a natural and inescapable part of the life cycle, and apply new knowledge and skills to help transcend adversity and build resilience.

Breaking Karmic Influences: Transcending Your Past to Transform Your Future

Karma is a concept that speaks to the spiritual cycle of cause and effect relative to the effects or consequences of works, actions, or deeds. We constantly create karma—consciously and unconsciously—from our thoughts, words, attitudes, expectations, behaviors, actions, and lifestyle.

Karma can be positive or negative. This presentation focuses on the negative energy bodies stored in our DNA and the karmic cycles that result from acts of omission and commission in previous generations. Unaddressed, these forces (patterns of behavior, emotions, and events) can block our true path and impact the quality of our lives.

Learn how to identify your own ancestral karmic forces, understand how they influence your life, and explore ways to break those energetic cycles to facilitate personal growth and development.

Race, Power & Privilege: Examination of an Illusion

Explores the psychology of race, power and privilege and the intersection of trauma and identity; examines the transmission and impacts of historical and cultural oppression passed down from previous generations; gain self-and other awareness, new knowledge and insights to understand, confront and transform individual pain to begin breaking negative familial patterns that help ignite personal transformation and incite social change

Internalized Racism: Our Complicity in Systems of Oppression

Using a trauma lens, examines the acceptance by members of stigmatized races of negative messages about their own abilities and intrinsic worth; discuss examples of internalized racism in terms of how it is reflected in systems of privilege and societal values, perpetuates negative stereotypes, erodes individual sense of value, and undermines collective action

Decolonizing Mental Health to Improve the Therapeutic Relationship

This session presents the components and characteristics of a more integrative and responsive mental health care system. We examine the role of intergenerational trauma, historical trauma, and individual trauma, and we use a decolonized approach to mental health to explore community care models that emphasize individual and collective healing.

I Am Not Who You Think I Am: Deconstructing the Trope of the Angry Black Woman

Using a trauma lens, examines the roots of the "angry Black woman" and other stereotypes images, icons, ideologies, and the misrepresentation of Black women; the intersecting identities of group stereotypes, the gendered process of racial identity construction among Black women; how internalized racism and oppression shapes identities, attitudes, and behaviors; and redefining Black womanhood

The Power to Influence: Leading Through Turbulent Times

The ability to influence is a key asset for progressive leaders and a critical skill in virtually every sector or industry, especially during difficult times.

Learn how to confidently and effectively navigate changing conditions by cultivating your leadership capabilities to influence the emotions, attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and actions of others by using three (3) types of influence and adhering to seven (7) core principles to set organizational tone and direction, instill a sense of calm, focus on the big picture, motivate stakeholders, and prompt action during uncertain and turbulent times.

Mindset Reset: Reframe Your Thoughts and Reshape Your Life

Are you suffering from self-limiting beliefs? If so, you're not alone.

Negative beliefs are quite common and they produce negative thoughts that feed chronic stress and impact us mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The more negative beliefs we harbor, the greater our fears, doubts and frustrations, and the lower our mood, self-esteem, self-worth and worldview.

Change your mindset, increase personal motivation and success, and experience greater life satisfaction by unlocking seven (7) keys to conquering self-limiting beliefs.

Harnessing the Power of Accountability

A functional workplace requires accountability, which is a factor that directly impacts people, productivity and performance. Examining accountability through multiple lenses, we explore the true meaning of accountability and outline practical steps for integrating its principles to promote individual, group and organizational effectiveness and success.

Testimonials (10)
  • Dr. Mary could be called Dr. Truth. She is one of the most honest, vulnerable, and respectful humans I have ever encountered in my many decades of life. I was fortunate to discover her while searching social media for people who had the courage, the dignity and grace to hold up a mirror, not to spoon feed me, but rather to have me dig deeply into myself, uncover the history and profound flaws of my privileged life. Dr. Mary’s presence, intelligence, unwavering integrity cracked open my heart, my mind, my psyche to much larger race relations issues, the depths of generational trauma and sustained grief, whether personal or collective. Through Dr. Mary’s vulnerable sharing, I learned that we do not have grief – rather, that grief has us, rising up to greet us in countless ways. As we acknowledge its existence, however it shows up, we are more free to move through that grief. Dr. Mary’s life and work is a beacon on that journey.

  • As a "wordsmith," I believe I understand better than most the power of language in our lives. On levels both subtle and explicit, it can inform, heal, and inspire; it can also suppress. Dr. Mary Canty Merrill pushes me to re-examine my own use of language, and by extension that used by my clients. As a person who puts words out into the world (and in the process uses references and standards generated by elite individuals), Dr. Mary Canty Merrill has ultimately led me to evaluate power dynamics and how I can make a difference.
    Lesa Guy
  • Dr. Mary's capacity to inspire, tell the unvarnished and highly informed truth, organize, motivate and hold everyone to their highest level of expression is impressive. Her skills and passion should not be squandered on "soft" topics, half-hearted commitments, or fragile egos or psyches. She is uniquely crafted for the most harmful, longstanding issues plaguing our culture and its mirrored organizations today. Do not waste this woman's talent and devotion. Embrace it with commitment to do right by it.

  • Dr. Merrill provides open, honest, direct and eye-opening feedback to her clients and social justice followers on race, white supremacy, privilege and Black excellence. She stands in her truth and shakes our country, infrastructure, systems and processes to do better and to look at the role each of us plays in enabling the unjust world that exists for our Black and Brown sisters and brothers. We white people in positions of privilege should heed her message and absorb the radical truths she shares. If you don't want to hear the truth, don't call on Dr. Merrill...but...you absolutely should.
    Diana Heme
  • I have been an admirer of Dr. Merrill’s for several years, and she has transformed my thinking. Her powerful words cut to the truth in a way that makes you re-evaluate who you are from the inside out. She is very passionate about dismantling racism. Those who have the privilege of hearing her speak are forever impacted by her words. I am thankful for the work she does for the community!
    Tabitha Richardson
  • I have learned more from Dr. Mary Canty Merrill about race relations and racialized/generational trauma than any other person or book. I have watched her suffer great loss yet start the day with a smile and a word of help. She will kick you in the butt lovingly when you are wrong and point you in the right direction. Watching her helped me go through my own trauma last year. I recommend her highly.
    Susan Foster
  • I have known Mary Canty Merrill for six years, bearing witness to her viewpoints, understandings, and communication style. Dr. Merrill's intelligence is rare, expressing itself not only as a brilliant mind, but also as a social and spiritual clarity. Further, Dr. Merrill has the remarkable capacity to reveal the most tender of hearts, free to hold dear, grieve, and lift others in public. Bringing such a heart and mind, both fierce and diverse in their capacities and expression, is a mark of the kind leadership we most need.
