Bio

Scott Carroll, MD is the founder of the Ayni Neuroscience Institute.

He is dual board certified in both child and adult psychiatry and is a former associate professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He specializes in Pediatric Neuropsychiatry and in the treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pediatric Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS/PANDAS), Pediatric Autoimmune Encephalitis and traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Carroll is an internationally sought after media commentator and has appeared on programs in Asia and South America. He also regularly comments on local TV and radio stations about a wide variety of mental health and parenting issues.

In addition to his TV and radio appearances, he speaks across the US to both professional and lay audiences who invite him back year after year. He is best know for his TED style talk on the teen brain that lets adults finally "get" teenagers and for his heart warming story of his adoption sprinkled with tips for adoptive parents. His other popular talks include: ADHD Across the Life Span, Raising the Bipolar Child, The State of Mental Health Care Today and Surviving Manipulative People.

He is also the author of the multiple award winning book, “Don’t Settle: How to Marry the Man You Were Meant For” (Balboa Press, Nov 2016) which “marries” science and spirituality to help women marry the perfect man for them, the man they were meant for. He is currently working on a new book, "The Bipolar Child and Teen" which should be out in late 2020.

Originally from New Orleans, he attended MIT where he graduated with a BS in Physics. After serving as an intelligence officer in the USAF and then as a management consultant at Citibank, he graduated from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He then completed his residency and fellowship at the University of New Mexico. He currently lives in New Mexico with his wife and young daughter. The Teen Brain: Still Under Construction

An engaging “TED Talk” style, Dr. Carroll walks the audience through the neurobiology of the developing teen brain so the audience gets why teens are not adults and why they think and act so bizarrely at times. It also give practical tips for parents and adults that work with teens.

Surviving Manipulative People

Dr. Carroll’s most requested talk that breaks down how manipulative people actually manipulate us and what you can do to protect yourself. He also teaches highly effective techniques to turn the table and thrive around manipulative people.

ADHD: Across the Lifespan

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is the most common childhood mental illness and persists in to adulthood approximately 50% of the time. Dr. Carroll answers the question of how to know if someone has ADHD and covers all the treatment options from medications to supplements to emerging neuro-modulating treatments.

Seasonal Affective Disorder and the Winter Blues

Seasonal Affective Disorder (AKA the Winter Blues) is a vestigial form of hibernation in humans and is now recognized to be an aspect of a wide variety of mental disorders from Major Depressive Disorder to Bipolar Disorder and even Schizoaffective Disorder. Dr. Carroll presents the full range of treatment options from medications to supplements to non-pharmacological treatments such as light therapy.

The Neurobiology of ADHD

This is a technical lecture that focuses on the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD. It is more appropriate for professional audiences than lay audiences.

Shamanism: An Indigenous Healing System

Shamanism is an ancient healing art practiced by indigenous cultures across the world, that has exploded in popularity over the last decade. This talk explains the common features of shamanism from across the world and presents some simple techniques from Andean traditions that attendees can use for their own health and well-being.

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder

The diagnosis of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder exploded and increased over 40 times between 1995 and 2005, but more recent research has shown that while childhood onset Bipolar Disorder clearly exists, it is not nearly as common as was diagnosed in 2005. Also, new disorders were described in the DSM 5 which came out in 2013 that better capture the symptoms and behavioral problems being mis-diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder.

This talk covers the neurobiology of Bipolar Disorder and new treatment options for childhood onset Bipolar Disorder. It is appropriate for both parents and mental health professionals.

Autism Spectrum Disorder - A Growing Concern

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a newly described disorder that was developed by consolidating 4 previous disorders for the DSM 5. The rate of ASD has also exploded and is now thought to effect 2% of male children and 0.5% of female children. The rate of ASD in females is expected to increase even more as screening and diagnosing in females continues to improve.

This talk explains what ASD is and isn't and covers the current state of diagnosis and treatments including behavioral and pharmacological options. This talk is geared for parents and professionals that don't specialize in treating ASD.

Preventing Suicide in Children and Teens

Suicide has increased 21% in young males and 50% in young females since 2000. This increase is highly concentrated in teens and young adults in their 20's and seems to be linked to economic stress, sexual orientation/gender issues and the rise of social media.

Thankfully, there are many things we can do to both prevent suicide and treat suicidal thoughts. This talk covers what parents and professionals need to know about suicide and how they can help their children and clients.

4 hours

Based on Dr. Carroll's award winning book, "Don't Settle: How to Marry the Man You Were Meant For", this workshop walks both women and men through all the steps of identifying their personal relationship style and what type of person complements them the best and how to tell if a person is good spouse material almost immediately (or if they are not). Can be presented in an abbreviated form in 2 hours.
