Bio

Geographically displaced Australian. Focused on building infrastructure solutions for compute use cases using a spectrum of virtualization, containerization, and bare-metal provisioning technologies. Stephen is currently a Manager, Product Management at Red Hat based in Toronto, Canada. He got his start in Open Source while building out and managing web-based solutions for the Earth Systems Science Computational Centre (ESSCC) at the University of Queensland. After graduating with degrees in Information Technology and Commerce Stephen took a multi-year detour into the wonderful world of the z-Series mainframe while writing new COBOL applications for the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Stephen then landed at Red Hat where he has grown his knowledge of the infrastructure space working across multiple roles and solutions including OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and Red Hat Virtualization.

Currently focused on taking Red Hat's platforms to the edge, with a particular focus on telecommunications use cases including 5G Core, 5G RAN, and MEC.

Divide and conquer: resource segregation in the OpenStack cloud

As a cloud deployment grows both in size and in variety of workloads it is useful to be able to segregate compute resources based on factors such as physical location, networking connections, or the availability of specialized hardware. OpenStack provides a number of options for segregating compute resources in the cloud including:

Cells,
Host Aggregates,
Regions, and
Availability Zones.

The differences between each of these approaches are nuanced and often misunderstood. Additionally the capabilities available when using some of these techniques, particularly Host Aggregates and Cells, have been expanded in recent OpenStack releases.
This session will provide an indepth look into these each of these options for segregating resources in the OpenStack cloud.

Deploying Containers at Scale on OpenStack

Imagine being able to stand up thousands of tenants with thousands of apps, running thousands of Docker-formatted container images and routes, all on a self-healing cluster. Now, take that one step further with all of those images being updatable through a single upload to the registry, and with zero downtime. In this session, Steve Gordon of the Red Hat OpenStack Platform team will show you just that.
