5 Ways to Become More Intentional with Your Time and Stay Laser Focused

Has your perfect plan for the day ever gone completely off the rails? Do you constantly feel like your goals are out of reach? Maybe you feel like throwing your hands up in defeat and saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” The truth is that no one has control over every moving part of the day. Sometimes the power goes out, the car doesn’t start, or there is unexpected chaos at work. Despite such setbacks, it is still possible to be mindful of your time and passions when curve balls are thrown your way. You can invest each hour wisely and complete tasks with ease by becoming aware of what is within your control.

Here are five ways to efficiently navigate your schedule and nail every target on your to-do list.

Organize for Success

Imagine you get in your car ready to start the day, only to realize it smells like fast food; wrappers you never threw away are littering the passenger seat. Suddenly, the day is derailed, and time wasted, cleaning up sticky messes and stale leftovers from the night before. When living and working spaces are neat and organized, the day comes into sharper focus. People often ask me: “What helps me stay on point?” Sometimes it’s investing in a weekly planner or keeping a clock nearby to better budget each hour and keep productivity up. I prepare for the coming workday, cleaning my workspace. When we’re not wasting energy on clearing residue from the day before, we can stay connected to our goals and make the most of a new day.

Find Your Priorities

Many of us feel defeated by a long “to-do” list. Anxious thoughts, feeling “frozen” and unmotivated, even fear, can consume us. This is when setting priorities becomes crucial. As we review daily tasks, we can put them into organized buckets. Start with filling one bucket with the tasks that may affect other people — those activities that could create a domino effect if not done. Items that are more rewarding but less crucial can be put off to another day. This strategy provides internal motivation and a reward system, giving us a boost of energy as we get to the activities we enjoy after completing those items that are more urgent. Thoughtfully organizing “to-dos” into buckets based on priority makes agendas attainable and serves as a good reminder that some of the “small stuff” can wait.

Find Your Team Spirit

Are you the type of person that tries to go it alone out of fear of inconveniencing others? The truth is, working in teams is the secret sauce to success in work and life. I’ve learned that I don’t need to take on every project myself, especially when I might not be best suited for the job. Imagining a goal as a living, breathing person is an effective strategy. If a team member gives energy to a project but lacks the necessary passion or expertise, the goal isn’t being managed with the care or quality that a living, breathing “person” deserves. We sometimes feel we are obligated to jump in or volunteer, assuming no one else will do it. We might impulsively say, “I can hold that surprise birthday party at my house,” or “I can handle all the meeting arrangements.” However, we should try to be internally motivated and leave room for others to shine. It’s entirely possible that a friend or co-worker would be thrilled to host the event, but our feelings of obligation robbed them of a chance to offer. When we share the workload with others, we free up the time needed to work on the projects we love, which boosts our confidence, allowing us time to shine.

Break the Distraction Cycle

Do you ever find yourself quickly checking a text message, and somehow you go down a rabbit hole, and the next thing you know, you’ve wasted an hour on Instagram? The reason distractions draw us away from our goals isn’t that we lack focus, but rather, there is a need we haven’t addressed. For example, maybe I kept hitting the snooze button because I didn’t carve out time for myself. Or perhaps I find my stomach rumbling throughout the day because I didn’t eat a proper breakfast. If we fail to meet our personal needs before jumping into the agenda, we will quickly lose concentration and feel inefficient and frustrated. It’s important to schedule downtime where we can refuel or plan to reward ourselves when we complete an important objective. By giving attention to what’s missing, distractions are minimized, and we can hit those deadlines with ease.

Energize Yourself First

Perhaps you’ve tried everything you can think of to motivate yourself to start on the “to do” list, but you’re too tired to even get out of bed. When a workday is slammed with activity, it can seem stressful and counterintuitive to focus on rest. Once more, we can think about goals as having human qualities, remembering that they need to be nurtured to completion. When we’re not at our best, how can we give those exciting projects the attention they need to thrive? It’s okay to call it a day if it’s already been long. Revisiting a tricky problem tomorrow morning with a fresh pair of eyes can help us envision the project in a whole new light. Alternatively, going for a massage, taking a break to stretch or even stepping outside for a few minutes can remove the tension. Moving stagnant energy around releases the stress that keeps us from working effectively. Starting the day’s agenda with positive and well-rested energy means we’re investing our best effort, which boosts productivity.

By practicing intentionality, we use our internal vision and motivation to shake up the day, creating a pathway to success. Once this happens, we can see challenges as a way of making the most of a day’s “moving parts” and owning the schedule, employing strategies that bring us a sense of accomplishment. Getting mastery over the day is the secret to turning a mere job into a fulfilling career, and that begins with mindful intention.
