When people learn that I was born and raised in the South Bronx of New York City the first reaction I receive from society is the look of disappointment or shock. The Bronx is depicted as an urban borough with high rates of violence, low income families and an abundance of uneducated people. This view is perpetuated by the media which, unfortunately, society believes to be true. Inequality in the education system, health care and other social institutions persist. In addition, due to the media’s portrayal of urban environments, inner city youths comply with the depiction that they will never make it out of their environment, therefore forcing them to not seek higher education and remain in the streets. Everyone, no matter what race, gender, class, or religious background has the right to equal assistance and education. Hence, my passion to speak about succeeding when the odds or society are not in your favor.
I am a Posse and Gilman alumni, that is currently getting the Masters and work for one of the largest not for profit education company. I want to continue to show people of similar background that achievement is always accessible.
