Presented as part of the 50th Annual Chiefs of Ontario Dialogue Session, this talk explores how evolving Canada-US trade tensions and tariff regimes are affecting First Nation economies across Ontario. With a focus on key business sectors—including natural resources, construction, retail, and agriculture—this session offers context on the historical and political roots of current trade disputes and how they intersect with Indigenous rights, economic development, and sovereignty. Grounded in recent academic analysis and developed in partnership with the Chiefs of Ontario, the session equips leaders with insights into both the risks and strategic opportunities these trade disruptions present. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the disproportionate impacts on Indigenous-owned businesses and explore proposals for advancing treaty-based trade protocols, securing targeted relief funding, and implementing Indigenous-led trade strategies.
