People have many misunderstandings about copyright in the digital age--one being that content on the Internet is free to use.
People who would never think of using someone's physical property without seeking permission are unaware that they may be unintentionally using intellectual property without permission… …until they receive that letter from an attorney—and it’s not their attorney. With their heart pounding, they frantically tear open the envelope to find that they have allegedly infringed the copyright of the attorney’s client. The client is demanding payment of a large fee for a license. An awareness of copyright basics could have helped them avoid that.
We are all CONSUMERS and CREATORS of copyrighted content. (No formal registration is required!) Businesses and organizations of all sizes (for-profit and non-profit) need to take measures to protect the original content they create.
Artists, photographers, and musicians face special challenges.
Businesses are aware of many compliance requirements (OSHA, ADA, Sick time, Minimum wage, Overtime pay, FMLA, etc. etc.) but often don't realize that compliance with the U.S. Copyright Law is also important; non-compliance can be just as/even more damaging to a company as non-compliance.
