Bermon has spent the past 20 years with a focus on product strategy, design, and web development across a handful of industries. In his current role at EY Digital, Bermon leads innovation initiatives that help organizations create holistic experiences, digital products, and services, with an eye towards delivering value to customers. Bermon is also responsible for building out and staffing the EY wavespace™ in Charlotte, a physical innovation space equipped with accelerator programs, co-creation activities, and facilitated design thinking sessions that help teams get in the mindset of approaching challenging problems differently, reinforcing the value of diverse thinking, and creating solutions through rapid prototyping.

As the innovation and strategy lead at EY digital, Bermon applies his expertise in experience strategy, design thinking, agile and lean methodologies, and interface design and development. He frequently speaks at conferences and facilitates workshops around the world. In his local community, Bermon organizes and hosts numerous free community events, hosts a quarterly mini-conference called FusionConf, and leads the Charlotte IxDA chapter.

Before joining EY, Bermon led various cross-discipline teams that crafted holistic product strategies all the way to end-to-end implementation of digital products and services. Projects are Easy. People are Hard.

Somewhere, a project is failing. It may be your project and you aren’t even aware yet. More than likely the project isn’t failing because it’s difficult, or the budget ran out, or because there wasn’t a market fit. The project is failing because of people. People are anything but stable and introduce communication problems, staffing problems, politics, disenchantment with the client or stakeholders, and often result in lack of motivation on projects. It doesn’t matter what methodology you use to scope, design, and implement a project if you’re unable to deal with the underlying people issues because people are hard and people are what cause project failures.

5 things:
1. The irrational, impulsive, and emotionally driven challenges people introduce on projects
2. Overcoming different communication styles
3. Guidelines to effectively handle conversations
4. Communication techniques to help overcome people problems
5. Understand how to overcome biases and reduce project failures

Rapid Prototyping with Vue.js

Overview:
Ever feel like the design process is a drag? You’ve gotta do some research, define some wireframes, maybe do some high fidelity mockups? Sometimes talking gets in the way of the actual doing and sometimes there’s more value into just do. Recognize the benefits of rapid prototyping to increase communication and collaboration on your project teams. There are a number of great rapid prototyping tools out there today. In this session, we’ll focus on Vue.js as a rapid prototyping tool to quickly implement functional design concepts and streamline the designer + developer relationship.

Five Things Audience Members Will Learn:

1. Challenges with most design to development processes
2. Benefits of rapid prototyping
3. Creating a consistent language between designers and developers
4. Leveraging frameworks like Vue.js to build a rapid prototyping framework
5. Bending the web to your will to create highly functional prototypes

Successfully Hire, Mentor, Retain, and Lead Teams

Finding highly-qualified professionals and then managing them successfully is one of the most difficult tasks leaders face. Just a small number of poor performers can bring down a team and impact delivering a great product. On top of poor hiring practices, when leaders fail to inspire, enable and provide an environment where their team can collaborate and thrive, they will consistently produce mediocre results.

In this sessions you’ll discover:

* how to successfully research potential candidates;
* writing effective job descriptions;
* recruiting, interviewing, and hiring techniques;
* keeping recruits interested, growing, and contributing back to the team;
* leadership techniques to help you be more effective

Balancing “Agile” with Continuous Discovery

The conversation around software development has historically been framed around the software developer’s workflow. As result, most of the product development methodologies that teams typically use work great for developers. However, these methods aren’t ideal for designers. Trying to break down the design process into a series of sprints is like trying to run a race where the finish line keeps moving. So what product development method really works for the design process, allowing for continuous discovery while still keeping on track with development?

In this workshop, we will talk about how we deal with these challenges, and run through a light version of this method by developing a solution to a problem.

Maintainable Style Guides

A style guide is a great collaboration tool to bridge communication gaps between business stakeholders, designers, and developers. Static or living style guides are a great place to start but become increasingly difficult to maintain because style guide generators are dependent on parsing comments in CSS in order to generate HTML patterns and documentation. In short, there is no single source of truth for the HTML leading to maintainability problems. In this session we will discover creating a truly reusable module by creating a pattern API.

Five things audience members will learn:

1. modular template patterns
2. dependency management and versioning per module
3. turning modules into the “single source of truth” through a module API
4. how to call the API to create a style guide
5. how to call the API to create templates and pages within an application

Technologies used:
Node, Angular, React, Component, Sass (Libsass)

Integrating User Experience and Agile

Many companies mistakenly view Agile as nothing more than a process or methodology that will solve their development woes and permit them to launch better software faster. In this presentation Bermon will focus on sharing Agile as a way to think about how to software could be created and ways user experience can be integrated. UX practitioners, designers, and developers are all welcome.
Attendees will discover:

1. a better definition of User Experience and the disciplines involved
2. a brief explanation of Agile
3. difficulties that exist when integrating user experience and Agile
4. ways to improve integrating user experience in an Agile setting

Embrace Conflict. Improve Collaboration

One of the largest problems that we face on teams and within organizations is the illusion that communication has taken place. In most cases, when we are faced with the necessity to confront emotionally or politically risky issues we tread lightly in order to avoid hurting feelings. Conflict plays an important and necessary role in the design process. Healthy conflict increases trust, creates effective dialog and improves collaboration.

During this session we will discuss examples and key skills that will help you:

- argue effectively while maintaining the correct level of candor and respect
- approach difficult issues like dealing with an unrealistic scope/schedule, holding teammates accountable when they perform poorly, or stakeholders that aren't providing sufficient leadership for a project
- create successful conflicts that get relevant information in the open
- encourage teammates to effectively share their opinions and articulate theories

Serve the One, Save the World

A little empathy goes a long way and our capacity to serve our teams and our local communities can have lasting results, either for ourselves or for the individual. We all have different specialities and, in most cases, when we think about changing the world, we tend to focus on technology. The focus of this session will be to share a few personal stories that illustrate how an individual can impact the life of another for the better.

In this keynote, you will discover practical concepts to help you understand how to motivate and influence through service.

Design Thinking – Innovation to Implementation

What is the best way to think through challenging problems, recognize areas for innovation, generate market opportunities, and enrich customer value? Design thinking is a creative problem-solving methodology that helps transform complex problems into valuable opportunities by putting the customers’ needs first. By being people centric, design thinking refocuses our efforts on the customer (internal or external) and offers enormous potential for innovation and competitive advantage in our solutions.

In this hands-on workshop you’ll discover:
* The fundamentals of the design thinking methodology
* The fallacy of innovation
* Ways to bring greater collaboration among business, technology, and design teams
* Tactical exercises that you can apply to your client projects to get to the root of their challenges to help craft the right solutions to the right problems
* Practical methods to integrate design thinking activities into the full development lifecycle

Crafting a UX Strategy

In the work that we do as UX designers, the ultimate goals we have are to create products and services that people enjoy using while also providing value back to the business. To achieve those goals there can a number of challenges that prevent our success, end up minimizing customer delight, or put in jeopardy the return on investment to the business.

In this session we'll:
- Outline a typical UX strategy
- Talk about the roadblocks and gotcha's that can limit our success
- And ways to implement a successful strategy
