Bio

I am a software developer and product designer, and was an executive member of a venture-backed and exited technology startup. With years of experience navigating the competing priorities of engineering, product, sales, and customer support, I help companies ship profitable software.

I also speak about product and UX strategy from time to time, and I credit my early career as a middle school teacher for a dash of exposure therapy that has prepared me for a life of presentations. :)

Likes:

- Small, nimble teams.

- Change and people who are ok with change.

- When @dhh gets particularly insightful.

- Craft beer, although this is now about as original as having a beard.

- My daughter's preschool songs.

- Deploying.

- The cold side of the pillow.

- Trello. It's basically the best app ever made. (Don't ruin this for me, Atlassian.)

Dislikes:

- Arugula.

- Waiting for "sign-off".

- When @dhh gets particularly righteous.

- Those two times the Rangers were within a strike of winning the World Series, and yet didn't.

- LinkedIn summaries.

I Believe:

- You should build less than you think you need to.

- "Your intellectual opponents aren't evil." - Russ Roberts (@econtalker)

- The company that ships will beat the company in yet another meeting.

- What you choose to leave out of your product is often as important as what you decide to put in.

Remote Work Shouldn't Be Lonely

Despite remote work’s well-documented benefits, remote workers often face feelings of social, intellectual, and creative isolation.

In Buffer's 2019 "State of Remote Work" report, 19% of remote workers cited loneliness as their biggest struggle working remotely.

Remote leaders need to keep their best people by keeping them connected. The old axiom used to be, “People don't quit their job. They quit their boss.”

On remote teams, people quit their loneliness and find a team that knows how to do remote work right.

In this talk, I will explore the best practices of remote companies that create trust, stay connected, and build community.

With specific, actionable examples of how to execute communications, team retreats, 1:1s, and how to design productive workspaces; this talk will help leaders of remote teams plan for the future of work.
