Being Comfortable Around Disabled People And Treating Them With Respect How do you feel sitting next to a disabled student in your class? How do you feel when you see a person with a disability shopping or walking down the street? Have you ever been on a bus or a train and when a person in a wheelchair takes extra time to get on or off, how does that make you feel? I am asking you all these questions because disabled people are still people and as a society we need to learn to be comfortable with them and treat them like everyone else. 15% of the world’s population have a disability of some kind. In my experience growing up and as an adult with a disability I have almost always been treated differently. So I thought I would share my story with you all. Let’s start from the beginning, my twin sister and I were born at 28 weeks gestation, which is 12 weeks premature.
