There is a mounting amount of evidence in several fields of research, spanning neurophysiology, human cognition and psychology, that strongly suggest there is no such thing as free will, and rather humans are extremely complex state machines that, were we to have enough information about our internal state, we would be able to accurately predict any behaviour given a set of inputs.

The collection of huge amounts of data and the application of several data-science techniques, the most notable of which being Machine Learning, promises to unravel this internal state, allowing anyone in possession of a large enough dataset to manipulate almost perfectly any audience.

The structure of our society, from law to religion, is firmly grounded in the concept that its members act and choose using their free will. If this concept goes away, huge societal and ethical challenges will immediately appear, some that will have to be addressed by politicians, others by researchers and technologists.

You computer will use YOU!!!

In this talk I take the audience in a journey into the mind of one of the most notorious terrorists of the 20th century, the Unabomber, as a starting point to introduce a cognitive model of human activity as a tool to understand the impacts of technology in societies.

You DON'T want to get invested!

Deconstructing many of the myths about investment in startups is no easy task. Everyone seems to be desperate to get the next round of investment, when getting invested at the wrong moment and in the wrong terms can kill your business.

The FEAR factor

Humans are natural born entrepreneurs. What then makes so many of us afraid to take the necessary leaps to explore our full potential? In this talk I walk the public through the origins of learned fear and the benefits that come from becoming consciously brave.

The Innerpreneur Habits

Managing one's life is not dissimilar from running a startup. This talk addresses some of the tools that entrepreneurs use that you can use for your own personal development and lead a better life, by including small but extremely consequential habits in your lifestyle.

Fly or Crash

When you are running out of runway, it's time to go big or go home. In this presentation I tackle the most significant aspects of going to market, measuring your progress and making the fast decisions that will allow your startup to soar above the competition.

Measures of Success

What numbers should you keep track when trying to assess where your startup is on your roadmap? Which numbers will help you determine success and which will guide you there? What numbers will a potential investor want to know about? This presentation is all about numbers and how they can become a vital tool in implementing your vision.

  • David is an intriguing person. What is intriguing about David is that he opts to live a peculiar life. A lifestyle of doing what you love, pursuing your dreams and working (very) hard. But mostly, a life where failure is praised and opportunities are seized. A life of epic adventures, a refusal of the 9 to 5 working schedule and an ordinary work-life balance. And living like this, while exciting for the majority of the human beings on this planet, scares them to their bare bones. I invited David to join a discussion panel on the "Future of Education and Careers", on ENE3 - Encontro Nacional de Estudantes de Engenharia Eletrotécnica, due to his fascinating life experiences. The panel ended up to be cancelled, but we decided to replace it with a talk on "The Fear Factor". For about 40 minutes, David was able to captivate the students, creating awareness to how fear was dictating their lives and how they had missed opportunities just because they were too afraid to fail. David is an incredible speaker and an excellent communicator, with a special trait: he speaks from the heart. The knowledge that he shares and advices that are given on his talks are the result of his life experiences, but mostly, his failures and taken opportunities. That is why we can deliver such powerful talks: authenticity speaks volumes!

  • I have been present at 5 events where David Carvalhao was a speaker. So far I witnessed him highlighting two topic at conferences- motivational and technical, and once he was very kind to lead a session about self-effectiveness during Erasmus+ youth exchanged which I organised. As he has huge experience in mentoring, he made an excellent 90 minutes "lesson" for 35 youngsters from 7 countries. He guided them through digital and mental tools they may easily use to increase quality of their work/life. His motivational talk is about fear factor which can stop young entrepreneurs from development, achievements and taking risks. Really cool speech, David makes it extremely interesting by mentioning his own experience and adding some humour and self-irony. Slides are also bright, they do catch an eye. Both times I paid attention that everybody in an audience was totally involved and curious. Technical presentation is also very ethical. David elaborated a great scheme of gradation humans' labour, then referring to it he explains which types ow jobs will be automised and what may happen if many people become unemployed. It's a very strong presentation and it really makes people THINK. David's presentations are good for adults as well as for younger people. He has a good sense of audience and usually wisely adjusts the way he speaks about any topic, so his listeners can understand the message as much as possible. Also I find it very positive, that David is open to answer questions and always is attentive to people's needs. Really looking forward to see David's presentation or work with him again!

  • David Carvalhão is just ... chaos in person! I'm using this word just like him, with a good intent. He is capable of transmitting his experience and knowledge in a very good way. Their talks are not the boring ones, he knows how to touch and conquer the public with the right moves and topics. This guy is a natural communicator and feels relaxed talking to one, ten, one hundred or one thousand people. From inspiring to teach about strategy or investment tactics, David Carvalhão is a 5 Star Speaker!

  • David is a super motivated professional, and a phenomenal speaker! I had the pleasure to invite him to talk about "The Fear Factor" at the "Start Your Career" conference. By the end, the feedback was just incredible, he absolutely caught all of the audience's attention. If you haven't met him, don't miss out!

  • I had the amazing pleasure of working with, learning from, and hearing David speak at the European Innovation Academy. The worlds largest accelerator (with organizations like Google, Daimler, U.C. Berkeley, and Stanford) brings individuals together to tackle the worlds greatest challenges and opportunities. David inspired, motivated, and coached some of the brightest minds so effectively. He was able to do this because but has lived the journey of the entrepreneur in many different ways. He has great experience (and stories) involving a variety of different technologies, businesses (both from the investment and startup point of view), and non-profits.

  • I had the pleasure of inviting David Carvalhão to a new series of talks that is currently being hosted by AETTUA - the juvenile association that I’m currently managing. Honestly, it was a huge mistake! Now, the expectations for the next talk are humongous and it will be extremely difficult to find such a good speaker. David really sets the bar high! As a communicator he is one of the best, conquering all the audience during hours, while speaking about a hundred different subjects. As a human being, in my opinion, he is one of the funniest people i have ever met, so as he is one of the craziest. His personal stories, successes and failures give his talks a all new twist and make them even more interesting. If i remember correctly, the most difficult thing to Carvalhão during his talk was leaving the room. There were so many people that wanted to talk to him and give him their positive feedback. It took like 30 minutes for him to leave the room! I can only thank him and it’s kinda impossible to recommend David enough !!! Thank you for allowing us to have you in one of our activities.
