Bio

Janice Hooker Fortman, Ed.D, is an international speaker, author, and effective communication strategist.Dr. Jan believes that communication is the foundation for all relationships, both personal and professional, therefore, people's opinions of you or your organization are formed by the way you communicate both verbally and non-verbally. As an author, Distinguished Toastmaster, and award winning public speaker she gives real world solutions in powerful, engaging and memorable presentations.

She is a member of the Chicago Writers Association, Women's Speakers Association and was recognized by the National Association of Professional Women as the 2013/2014 Professional Woman of the Year for leadership in public speaking. She was selected as a visionary author for Braveheart Women, the largest international online community for female visionaries and was honored in 2014, 2015, and 2016 as an outstanding volunteer for Age Options, an agency that provides self-management skills for older adults with ongoing health conditions. She is considered one of the top ten most influential women on the Southside of Chicago.

Her book entitled "The Little Book of BIG Behavior Interventions" presents the common misbehaviors of pre-k and elementary school children. Her keen insight on why young children misbehave in their classrooms is popular with teachers who are faced with challenging misbehaviors.

Dr. Jan is most passionate about her latest book "The Secrets to How Not to Throw Mama from the Train", that focuses on the relationship between adult daughters and their aging mothers, and the communication patterns that cause difficulties in this relationship. Her related workshops offer insight, advice and solutions on resolving conflicts in this complicated and dynamic relationship.

Dr. Jan also presents "Independent Thinking Skills", a motivational workshop for adults and children who need assistance in setting life and professional goals. Her most popular keynote speech is "Are You Listening"? Jan is very happily married to her husband Keith who is a cancer survivor.

The Cycle of Self Talk - Improving High School/college Student Self Image

Often, our students have difficulty with negative self talk. What is the conversation that goes on inside of your mind? Self communication is powerful and controls the way you behave, and how you feel about yourself. Self talk can be negative and work against you, or positive and work for you. Through this interactive presentation, students learn the steps to controlling self talk, improving productivity, increasing motivation, and improving self image.

Leadership and Effective Communication Skills

In order to be a good leader, you must master the art of clear effective communication. Effective communication can help improve employee motivation in several ways. The assumption is that communication is mainly the words we use, but it's more. It also involves your body language, tone of voice and listening skills. Your audience will leave with the tools that will greatly improve their motivational and leadership skills.

Are You Listening

There are things we have you done, are doing, or situations that we find ourselves involved in, whether we wanted to do them or not, but ended up enjoying it, and these activities seemed to have a common thread - a common denominator. The universe trying to tell you something. We are all born with gifts. The audience will learn to recognize these gifts by connecting the dots and using this information to choose their life paths.

Emotional Intelligence and Public Speaking

The audience will be able to understand the major causes of fear in public speaking and given tools to utilize emotional intelligence competencies to address those fears.
