Education Equity: A Focus on Literacy (March 2023)
I presented to the BIG Ten Equality Coalition during their March Reading Month Campaign about literacy as a mechanism for social change. I highlighted issues such as the school to prison pipeline, deflated sense of abilities and autonomy among minority students and the over-criminalization of black youth in primary and secondary schools across the nation to argue that focusing on improvement of literacy levels can remedy these issues. More specifically, how diversifying reading curriculum, donating to Early Literacy Intervention Initiatives and facilitating book drives can provide students with a more equitable and empowering education experience.
