This presentation for the Georgetown Doctor of Liberal Studies Alumni Circle focused on addressing the challenges of ending retaliatory violence. Content included examining the root causes of violence, such as disputes over resources. I delved into bio-psychological and neurological aspects of social pain, including humiliation, as justification for revenge among actors ranging from pastoralist cattle herders to violent extremists. I raised issues of trauma and cultural elements related to honor and the morality of violence. I closed by discussing methods used to stop cycles of violence through the ages and how to adapt them to our modern world.
