Bio

Jon Birger is a Fortune magazine contributing writer, freelance journalist, and public speaker. His first book — DATE-ONOMICS: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game — was published by Workman Publishing in the fall of 2015. Lauded by Jean Chatzky of NBC's Today Show as "the Moneyball of dating," DATE-ONOMICS explores how shifting gender ratios among college grads are affecting dating, marriage, hookup culture, and the economy.

A sought-after public speaker, Jon has given speeches on DATE-ONOMICS and on the impacts and origins of the college gender gap at major venues such as South By Southwest, The Cato Institute, The Economic Club of Florida, and New York City's 92nd Street Y. "Jon's event drew over 300 people — one of the Cato Institute's biggest of the year," said The Cato Institute's Emily Ekins. "He really delivered a fun and interesting talk with a stimulating Q&A.”

Other credentials: The Silicon Valley trade group AlwaysOn Network has named Jon to its list of “Power Players in Technology Business Media." For Fortune, he has written feature articles on companies such as Apple, Priceline, Kendall Jackson, and Royal Dutch Shell, and on topics ranging from oil and technology to stocks and mutual funds. His writing has also appeared in Fast Company, Money, Time, Barron’s, The Washington Post, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Additionally, he's a frequent guest on TV and radio, discussing topics ranging from the dating market to the stock market on ABC's Good Morning America, BBC World Service, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and National Public Radio.

It's Not You, It's the Ratio: How Sex Ratios Affect Dating

Jon uses his DATE-ONOMICS research to explain how sex ratios drive the hookup culture and fuel a disconnect in adult sexual behavior today. Dating guides tell women it’s their fault— they returned his text message an hour too soon or an hour too late etc. Jon’s explanation: With 4 women graduating college for every 3 men, dating is lopsided in men's favor. Jon discusses consequences and solutions.

What The Rise of Millennial Women Means for Big Business

Shifting sex ratios among the college educated will transform how America does business. Since 2000, 33% more women than men have graduated college, and historically there’s a strong correlation between education and wealth. Bottom line: Millennial women will be their generation’s high earners. And this has huge implications for everyone from corporate recruiters to marketers of luxury goods.

Solving "The Boy Problem" in American Education

There's a boy problem in our schools. 33% more women than men are graduating college and US Dept of Education thinks it will be 47% by 2023. What's going on? Conservatives blame feminism & Title IX. Problem is, the college gender gap exists even in countries such as China where feminism has no foothold. The answer and solution lie in understanding brain-maturity differences between boys and girls.

What College Applicants Need to Know About Campus Sex Ratios

A dirty secret of college admissions is admissions at private colleges are exempt from Title IX. Vassar, i.e., has 35% acceptance rate for boys v. 21% for girls. Why discriminate against girls? Why are colleges obsessed with gender balance? Jon argues that the 60% female/40% male ratio at many schools feeds the hookup culture and contributes to campus rape scourge.
