Bio

Karen Naumann, APR is a multifaceted, seasoned practitioner with more than 25 years of experience.

The Federal government contractor’s current role is that of Sr. Instructor at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Information School, where Naumann trains information warriors for our country in topics ranging from Issues Analysis and Complex Adaptive Systems Thinking to Strategic Foresight and Human-centered Design.

Prior to this, she was an executive at an established D.C. public relations firm. She has also worked in communication and digital diplomacy for the Government of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Consulate General of Israel to the Southwest United States. Naumann was also a co-owner of a successful Texas-based communications firm.

The award-winning communicator is frequently tapped as a speaker and facilitator for conferences and events on topics ranging from cognitive biases and crisis communications to strategic communications and persuasion.

Naumann is accredited in public relations (APR). Additionally, she graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) with a bachelor’s degree in Communication. Later, she received a master's degree in Communication at the University of Houston. Her graduate studies focused on crisis and health communications.

She is active in the Public Relations Society of America at both a national and local level, the National Press Club, the National Association of Government Communicators, and Washington Women in Public Relations.

Cognitive Biases: The Poor Decisions that Our Brains Make and How It Affects Us

Humans do not always act in their best interests because of the cognitive biases that shape our decision making. This presentation is an interactive exploration of our brains' common deviation from rationality in judgment.

This presentation helps participants to gain the awareness of and solutions to overcome common biases that will not only enhance any employer/client work but also improve team dynamics.

Persuasion: Social Influence and Compliance Gaining

In this presentation, the psychology of influence and its communication application is explained in relatable, applicable terms that allow participants to tap into the power of persuasion. We explore compelling social forces that affect all humans for as long as humanity has existed. The research-backed knowledge that participants receive will give them insights into understanding why they say yes and how to get others to too. All walks of life can benefit from a better understanding of persuasion skills.

The presentation introduces more than a dozen concepts with a focus on four fundamental persuasion theories – theory of reasoned action, the theory of planned behavior, psychological consistency, and cognitive dissonance.

Communications 201: Taking Communications to the Next Level

Presenting proven communication theories in an attainable way that enlightens attendees on how communications influence from the personal to a global level.

Specifically, participants will get a quick overview and example of 27 theories in the areas of media effects, stakeholder analysis, messaging, and public relations strategy before taking a deep dive into two foundational theories -- Diffusion of Innovation and Agenda Setting Theory.

Participants will be able to apply understanding of these communication theories to situations they
encounter in professional and personal settings.
