Personal Details

Bio

Katie Fletcher is a civil and environmental engineer who likes to look at things differently. With a technical background in stormwater drainage design, she now straddles the lines between engineering, landscape architecture and master planning. By drawing these disciplines together, she’s developed designs which not only achieve engineering standards but provide social outcomes by increasing community connectivity, increasing our connection with nature and designing with empathy for all users.

For the past 15 years, she has been a prominent member of the stormwater community, presenting at several conferences and serving on the Stormwater Queensland committee as a past Secretary.

On a personal level, Katie is an advocate for human-centred design and empathy in the workplace. Using her own experiences with chronic illness, Katie works to educate and encourage empathy within teams to build greater levels of trust, support and ultimately team effectiveness.

Engineering with Empathy

Using my experiences over the last 16 years of engineering and personal life combined, I highlight how urban design, no matter how minor, can have an impact on the community. Using several case studies from around the world, I demonstrate how incorporation of a human-centred design approach can provide benefits at a social level, in addition to our traditional design standards. This consideration of the softer side of engineering is and will continue to be critical to our future.

Chronic illness and the workplace

Using my own experiences with chronic illness (myalgic encephalomyalitis), I discuss how we can turn a negative into a positive. By embracing my new limitations, I've found ways to maximise my efficiency and effectiveness which are applicable to everyone, healthy or not.
This presentation focuses on the themes of empathy, the social model of disability and resilience with an optimistic and uplifting tone.
