My Story

I started out in my career with the goal of becoming a research psychologist. I loved the years I spent training for this career – the experiments, the debates, feeling like I had a front-row seat to watch a nearly-new science come into its own.

But as I settled into my job as a professor at a state university, I realized something was missing. Always a practical person at heart, I wanted to see that new science put to use. I especially wanted to know what it told us about all the new technologies that had begun to radically change how the world thinks about education.

I realized that most students, and most college teachers as well, haven’t the faintest idea of how learning really works. Nor do they know how technology interacts with the mind and the brain to help (or hinder) learning. And so, I set out to share this research with my fellow college teachers. I started by publishing a few articles that later blossomed into a book, Minds Online: Teaching Effectively with Technology, published by Harvard University Press.

That book took off, opening opportunities to reach audiences in academic and corporate settings around the world. Today, that’s the kind of work I most love to do.

I’m also driven to keep investigating the relationship between technology, learning, and the mind. There's the practical issue of how remote and online learning can be made as effective - or more so - than the traditional classroom equivalent. Then there are the bigger questions of how technology is changing us. How do we pay attention in a technology-saturated world? Do today’s young people really focus differently, and is that because technology has changed their brains? Does technology change how we remember - and in that way, is it changing who we are?

When I give a talk, I start by demonstrating surprising, important principles of how the mind works, using anything from puzzles to examples from everyday life. Then I share concrete, actionable strategies about how to make those principles work for us, as we strive to succeed in an age where technology is everywhere and the ability to learn is the most valuable skill anyone can possess.

How I Can Help

I can help your team master the skills of memory, learning, and attention that they need to thrive in today's distracting and rapidly changing world. Through demonstrations, games, and discussions, we'll discover together the surprising truths about how our minds work, and leverage this knowledge to work, learn, and live better.

Join Dr. Michelle Miller to learn the answers to these and other questions about your mind’s amazing memory abilities, and how to make the most of those abilities in our everyday lives.

Testimonials (1)
  • We had high hopes and expectations for Michelle Miller, and she exceeded them. In bringing speakers to campus, we look for people who avoid the extremes of being overly fluffy or stuffy, and Michelle hit the sweet spot perfectly. There's no question that she is a rigorous academic who knows her cognitive psychology and scholarship of learning and teaching well, but she's also very practical and accessible. We also appreciated that she modeled the very kinds of pedagogical practices she advocated, making her presentation interactive, even with hundreds of participants. Frankly, to us it also meant a lot that we sensed Michelle is a kindred spirit who genuinely believes in the power of education to lift and better lives. And on a personal level, working with her was delightful! She was generous with her time and gracious in all her interactions as we prepared for her presentation to our faculty. We should note that we had contracted with Michelle to visit our campus in June 2020, and then the pandemic hit. We debated whether to postpone her appearance until a time when we could gather face-to-face again, or whether to proceed with an interactive online webinar. Given our faculty's interest in figuring out how to adapt to the current technological challenges as well as possible, we went ahead with the virtual meeting, and we're really glad we did. Over 300 faculty members participated, and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive. With the help of some of our team, Michelle was able to field multiple questions and many faculty members were able to participate. One sent an e-mail raving about Dr. Miller's visit, calling it "informative, engaging and extremely timely!" We are very grateful we didn't postpone hearing from her until we could do it in person. We recommend Michelle most highly as a speaker and a collaborator!
