MARINE GOVERNANCE: CRITICALITIES, SOLUTIONS AND CAPACITY BUILDING
Up to date we have reached 6.4% of Marine Protected Areas. Aichi Target 11 (CBD) called for 10% of coastal and marine areas to be conserved by 2020. Leading scientific experts assert that we need a more rigorous approach to conservation, including a goal of 30% protection by 2030. However, these Marine Protected Areas as the terrestrial protected areas, need to be effectively managed, ecologically representative and well connected systems. The on-going es¬tablishment of Marine Protected Areas over the world has prompted a need for capacity development. MPA governance, management and stakeholder engagement processes encompasses a wide range of interdisciplinary knowledge and socio-ecological skills. In this webinar, I will focus on the specific training needs for MPA professionals, and in particular, the competencies required for stakeholder engagement processes in MPAs, learned from first-hand experience in both large and small-scale co-managed MPAs.
