Bio

Building community and teaching come naturally to dog-lover and Developer Outreach Manager at Pantheon, Tessa Kriesel. She wears many hats in her life — all with sass and finesse — including founder of Outspoken Women and Coders of TMRW.

Tessa has spoken on many topics, including helping beginners with their development workflows, mentorship, building communities, and shedding light on continuous integration and deployment. She has also been a panelist on a wide range of topics at Conferences and Meetups.

When Tessa isn’t working on her development chops or mentoring junior developers, she is using her extroverted super hero skills to make people feel welcome and included at whatever event she attends.

Developing a Culture of Mentorship

It’s easy to spend your entire day, heads down, coding projects without thinking twice about other developers around you. We often get too absorbed with completing our immediate deadlines to spend any time considering the future of our projects, the future of our teams.

By not mentoring new developers we are failing our future. We are failing at providing new developers with the industry experience they need to be a one-day successful candidate for our teams.

In this session, we will talk about:

- Why your organization should hire junior developers
- How to write better job descriptions for junior developers
- How to create a mentorship program within your organization
- Where to find mentors or junior developers seeking mentorship
- How to be an effective mentor & mentee
- Shocking statistics about our job outlook and developer market

Creating Community: Building a Brand Advocacy Program

Often times developers want to find peers like themselves. We see this in our day-to-day by searching stack overflow or google for solutions to our unsolved problems.

Instead of stack overflow providing the answers for your users, why not build your own community and provide the resources your users need to be successful.

In this session, I will talk about why it’s important to provide your users with a place to ask & answer questions and to develop a sense of community & ownership around your product.

Building Gutenberg Blocks with Advanced Custom Fields

For those of us that rely greatly on Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) for customizing our themes, the release of Gutenberg was and still is scary at times.

Have no fear! acf_register_block() allows you to create your own Gutenberg blocks using just Advanced Custom Fields.

You will learn:
- ACF & it’s awesome capabilities
- How to create Gutenberg blocks with ACF
- A few other handy ACF tips & tricks

Marketing to Developers

Your organization has a great product, but no one likes a pushy salesperson (especially developers). How do you grow an organic developer following around your product without coming on too strong?

As Developers, we don’t want to be sold to - we want reliable tools that will save us time and make our lives easier. And we place much higher value in recommendations from fellow colleagues and friends in the community over an unknown entities. When you’re doing it right, sales will happen organically when the developers you’ve won over tell their friends all about it.

In this session we’ll discuss:
- How to get your new product in front of developers
- How to create bonds and develop relationships
- How to nurture a community that sells your product for you
