I am a lifelong Washingtonian. I was born in Seattle in 1971 and lived in south Snohomish County (Mountlake Terrace and Lake Forest Park) during my childhood. In 1983, we moved to Cle Elum where I attended middle and high school. After graduating high school in ’89, I studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where I completed a double major in archaeology and government. As part of my archaeological coursework, I attended two field schools – one in the high desert of southeast Oregon (through the University of Oregon), and one in Greece at a site called Halai (through Cornell). I met the love of my life and wife of almost 30 years, Wendy, while we were on the Halai excavation together. Wendy and I have two amazing adult daughters who have recently graduated from college themselves – Evelyn (WWU, working as a grant writer) and Kathy (UPS, who just completed an internship in a marine biology education center). We live in Lakewood, about eight minutes south of the Grand Lodge office, with our two dogs and five cats. Professionally, I spent the first 20 years of my career in property and casualty insurance. I transitioned to health care insurance in 2015 working as project manager, IT development manager, director of project management, VP of Operations, Chief Operating Officer, and now as the VP of Procurement and Strategic Initiatives. My Masonic history begins in 2005 when I joined Steilacoom Lodge #2. I am a three-time past master of that Lodge (2008, 2010, and 2019) and its current secretary. I’ve served as Deputy of the Grand Master for District 15 and on several committees, including Public Schools Outreach, Membership Development, Credentials, Trial, and Leadership Training. I am passionate about our ritualistic work and was honored to be the 2nd recipient of the Lifetime Excellence in Ritual Award. I am also active with the Tacoma Valley of the Scottish Rite as well as with my OES Chapter (Vida #35). It has been my privilege to work with the Masonic Heritage program for Washington Masonic Services.

Mariana Costea is a Care Governance & Operational Improvement Specialist, Registered Nurse, consultant and author with 17+ years of experience across health and social care. Her career has taken her from frontline care and nursing through registered management, regional clinical leadership, service turnaround and independent consultancy. That experience has given her a rare view of what happens when the reality of care begins to move away from what policies, audits and governance systems say should be happening. Mariana's central message is simple: care services rarely fail suddenly. They drift. She speaks about the early signs of operational drift, why organisations can receive reassurance while problems are developing underneath, how leaders can get closer to the reality of their services, and why more paperwork does not necessarily create better governance. Her talks combine real frontline experience with practical lessons in leadership, governance, regulatory readiness, organisational culture and sustainable improvement. She challenges audiences to look beyond whether systems exist and ask a more important question: are they actually working? Mariana is Founder and Director of Mareric Limited and author of Stopping the Drift, which explores how small gaps in leadership, governance and everyday practice can become normalised and develop into wider organisational failure. Her speaking style is practical, direct and grounded in the reality of health and social care.
