All of my life I have had to make a choice, feel sorry for myself or live my life unapologetically, authentically and with unbridled enthusiasm. I chose the later. I was born with a devastating neuromuscular disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) My parents were told that I would not live past my second birthday. How wrong they were! I am now a youthful 53 year old and have been happily married for 25 years. Despite the relentless progression of my disease I live life with passion. i had a choice, to become bitter about living with a disease that has left me a quadriplegic or embrace all of the wonderful things the world has to offer. I chose the latter. I am proud of my life! We all face challenges and we all have the decision to learn to love our lives or throw in the towel. I am an engaging speaker. I have been a speaker with The Canadian Red Cross. I spoke to high school students on Healthy Youth Relationships. In addition I represented the Red Cross on TV and at events. I have also worked as a Mental Health Educator and Recovery College Facilitator for Canadian Mental Health. My informal demeanour and the ability to create meaningful discussion among the participants is one of my greatest strengths.

After a long career as a corporate executive, Julie embarked on a journey to discover her roots. Using brief handwritten notes found among her father’s papers after he passed away, she set out to learn more about the ancestors whose DNA she shares. Julie has attended several genealogy courses, including the Genealogy Research Institute program on Practical Genetic Genealogy. She has also completed two 13-week programs on British Genealogical Research through The Society of Genealogists in London. Her genealogical research led her to a unique, mostly unknown, epic event that occurred just days after the end of the Civil War. She stumbled onto this event while researching her great, great, grandfather’s army service and P.O.W. records. As a result, she has become passionate about educating others about this event—especially high school and college students. Before becoming a self-professed genealogy addict, Ms. Adamik spent 45 years as a corporate human resources executive. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in business from San Diego State University. In addition to many public speaking engagements, she is past president of the North San Diego County Genealogical Society and a member of the National Genealogical Society, Illinois Genealogical Society, Ohio Genealogical Society, Society of Genealogists, and the Irish Genealogical Research Society. When not spending time (often late into the night) pulling her hair out trying to find her great-grandfather’s biological father, Ms. Adamik enjoys traveling, gardening and cooking. Julie will deliver a 45-minute PowerPoint presentation to your class, including the history of the ill-fated Sultana and a description of the capture and POW imprisonment of members of the Ohio 102nd OVI regiment. The Sultana Disaster: This incident was not “just” another steamboat that blew up and sunk. While licensed to carry 460 passengers and crew, the Sultana was loaded with about 2100 people. The vast majority, roughly 1900 men, were union civil war prisoners of war, recently released from Cahaba and Andersonville prisons. They were on their way home. You can imagine their excitement and longing as they boarded that steamboat! Sadly, most of them never made it. The Sultana Disaster has been acknowledged by Congressional Resolution as the greatest maritime disaster in United States history. On April 27, 1865 near Memphis, Tennessee, over 1000 former prisoners of war died when the Sultana exploded, caught fire, and sank. Investigations revealed a litany of corrupt practices, including kickbacks and bribes paid to high-ranking Union officers, which caused the overcrowding of the boat that led to this deadly disaster. Despite its significance, the Sultana has been overlooked in history because it was overshadowed at the time by the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. These events at the end of the Civil War conspired to wipe the memory of this tragic event

Sarah E. Alder was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. She comes from a large family with six other siblings and calls not only Utah home but Colorado as well. Sarah joined the United States Army Reserves in Salt Lake City, UT in February 2000 serving on active-duty service twice for: Operation Noble Eagle (ONE) for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Her expertise was ensuring all personnel files were correctly maintained to acted as the Junior Enlisted Promotions Non-Commissioned Officer and successfully promoted 250+ soldiers while on active duty. While completing her military contract at Fort Carson, Colorado she was working full time as a Quality Assurance Specialist in the Pharmaceutical industry and going to school at Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC). In May 2008, she graduated with her Associates Degree in English at PPCC and fulfilled her eight-year military contract with an Honorable Discharge. She continued her education at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) with a double Bachelor’s in Professional and Technical Writing and Sociology; additionally, receiving Cum Laude and Department honors and a special Certificate in the Sociology of Diversity; graduating in May 2011. During that same time, she greatly missed the camaraderie and fellowship of her fellow service members, which ultimately connected her with American Veterans for Equal Rights – Rocky Mountain Chapter (AVER-RMC) and later the John S. Stewart VFW Post 1. While actively participating with these organizations she reinstated the AVER Rocky Mountain Chapter in 2010 and served as Secretary, Vice President, and later as Chapter President supporting volunteers, members, and community partners for over an eight-year period. It is there that she cultivated her understanding of Committee/Council Governance, honed those skills in her various roles and later established great success in her role at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Sarah moved to Summit County, Colorado in 2021 with her family. They are greatly enjoying the Summit County area with quick access to the hiking trails, biking trails, and many other summer activities. When Sarah has time wealth, she greatly enjoys traveling anywhere in the world the local food, breweries, coffee shops, road cycling, hiking and often enjoys handywoman projects and woodworking. She is very passionate about establishing a community in Summit County, serving in that community, and providing diverse perspectives that support the environment, sustainability, the people enjoying those spaces and serving the residents who live in the area.
