For nearly two decades I've been immersed in understanding leaders: as a teacherr at West Point, as the architect of a high-potential leader development program at the world's largest company, and even while teaching in a medium security prison. I tell stories -- as a young lieutenant, I almost fired a tank round into the middle of a light infantry company. I later got my tank stuck in a swamp. And in my third year teaching at West Point a cadet asked me plainly: "Sir, why don't you love your daughter?" At amazon, I learned amazing lessons about organizational culture -- and share those stories with deep reflection. I then attempt to wrap that personal touch in the context of research, a Stanford Business School background, and the wisdom of other leaders. My keynotes have resonated with leaders from Microsoft's Bing team (even though I kept getting heckled for using "google as a verb), at a national conference of education administrators, and at an airline industry academy in China. Doug Crandall brings a depth and breadth of leadership development experience rivaled by few others -- with the added credibility of being a leader in his own right. A graduate of the United States Military Academy and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, he served for five years on the West Point faculty, earning the first-ever Excellence in Teaching Award from the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. He conceived of and created an advanced version of West Point’s core leadership course. He also built from scratch West Point’s renowned Black and Gold Leadership Forum, and then finished his tenure at West Point by helping drive the first major revision of West Point’s core leadership course in over twenty years. From 2010-2016, he spent much of his time in Bentonville, Arkansas, creating and teaching Walmart’s premier leadership program for high-potentials and mentoring over one thousand executives from every division of the world’s largest company. Woven between his work with Walmart was an eclectic mix of leadership development engagements including international work in China and France, development and execution of leadership programs for J.P. Morgan and Wirtz Beverage, keynote addresses for McKinsey and Company, USAA, Gap, Riot Games, and many others, and three years mentoring over two hundred leaders at Mission Support Alliance on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Mr. Crandall’s experience also includes substantial writing, having co-authored and edited Leadership Lessons from West Point, Permission to Speak Freely, and penning – with Major (Ret.) Scotty Smiley – Hope Unseen; he’s also written leadership case studies for Stanford and Harvard and authored multiple leadership articles.

I am an Architect by profession and a U.S. Citizen. I pursued my early education in Mumbai and continued it further in the Middle East, United Kingdom and the United States. I studied fine art in England and Wales for four years, dabbling in a myriad of media including pastels, water colors, oils, acrylics etc. I then relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, completing a five year NAAB-accreditted professional degree program in architecture. In 2002, I relocated to Kansas where I worked as an architect and taught design studio at the University of Kansas; here I confronted a new frontier of my career—the craft of glass sculptures. Since 2004, I have been sculpting glass in various shapes, forms and sizes. In 2010, I was accepted into Harvard for a postgraduate degree in landscape architecture. My education at Harvard gave me a greater understanding for the natural world and I translate my observations into my sculptural forms. Working from my Kansas City studio, my work is shown in a Johnson County home gallery as well as various art shows and competition throughout the United States and worldwide. Color, light and Social Awareness are the focus of my work. I concentrate on social reform through the application of color and light in my sculptures in articulating my narrative. The phenomenological responses to layers of filtered light and shadow in the environment is my rhetoric. I identify myself as the raconteur; bringing to light stories that are overlooked or forgotten or uncomfortable. Sharing these stories creates awareness of the problem, which in turn facilitates the platform for conversations and resolutions to take place. I believe art must step beyond the liminalities of aesthetic and transcend into the realm of social reformation. Art should resolve world issues. Art should have a voice that resonates loud and clear across boundaries. Art should be the champion of change.

Phill Branch is a storyteller working in film, creative nonfiction and theater. He is the 2019 recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council’s Solo Performance Artist Award and a 2019 Rubys Artist Award grantee. The grant will support the completion of his one-person show, Rolling Stops. The show examines examines living outside the prescribed definitions of blackness and masculinity. An alumnus of the American Film Institute, Branch recently directed Searching for Shaniqua; his documentary about the impact names have on our lives. The film won the HBO Best Documentary award at the 2016 Martha's Vineyard African-American Film Festival. Branch has served as a professor at his alma mater Hampton University and at Howard University. He is currently at Goucher College in Communication and Media Studies, focusing on race and ethnicity in film and media.
