Building your speaking business

Whatever form of travel you take when you are conducting business, it is inevitable that you will encounter a road with winding turns, detours, roadblocks, or traffic delays.

Ultimately, you arrive at your destination.

Today I flew Southwest from Indianapolis back home to Kansas. I am not a fan of flying but for the sake of business: “I’ll have a packet of peanuts and a coffee with cream and sugar please and thank you.

I captured this photograph outside of my window because the sky was sunny, and you could vividly see a clear view for miles.

I waved goodbye to the city where I grew up, feeling emotional about my opportunity to be a co-author of a new book.

As I admired the view, I noticed that the landscape begin to tell me a story.

As we ascended higher and higher, I could see how all of our lives resemble the pathways below.

There were streets and side roads, dead ends and detours, highways and byways.

I was encouraged by my view because I was reminded that despite the delays and adversities we may encounter, there will be a detour provided to help us reach our destination.

Detours, Dead Ends, U Turns

Detours, Dead Ends, U Turns

A detour can force you to revamp your business plan, find a more efficient way to conduct business, or inspire you to become more assertive and close that deal, which in turn can create new business leads. Do not despise detours.

Difficult times will present themselves as roadblocks, but alternate routes can be an opportunity for you to reinvent the wheel.

If you run into a dead end, it may be an indicator that you are stagnant in your efforts or business dealings and need to come out of your comfort zone and ready yourself to compete with the big dogs.

The scenic view in this photo should encourage all of us to forge on knowing that we may need to make a U-turn at an unexpected dead end but know that continuing in our travels, whether 500 miles, or a few cities away, we will get there - if we just keep moving.

Where are you going?

Do you know where you are going?

May I challenge you and ask, “Do you know where you are going?”

It may be growing your business or brand, contemplating if to merge or acquire a new business.

Whatever your destination is: DO NOT LEAVE THE PATH regardless of how it twists and turns. You may veer to the left and right to to avoid chuck holes (distractions) but whatever you do, don’t turn back.

When there is economic growth, one indicator we often see are CONSTRUCTION AHEAD signs.

As you travel on your path, just know that new construction can be an opportunity for new beginnings, new plans, new opportunities, new business dealings, or a friendly life reminder to pause and take a personal self-assessment.

Whatever “it” is for you.... just keep moving.

Ready – Set – Go!
