The professional development session aims to engage a group of educators in understanding the conceptual framework of S.I.R, Spot, Identify, Relate. While diving into the personal experiences highlighted in the book Without Apology, we can establish a better understanding of the effects of the home and cultural environments of low-income and inner-city youth. Mr. Davis will give practical and personal methods to address the challenges of underserved youth and establish a trusting relationship to serve their specific needs best. These methods will help educators from all backgrounds become better equipped to engage with disadvantaged students who often close their minds due to a lack of trust in a teacher to whom they cannot relate.

Mr. Davis will highlight the best practices of restorative circles in schools. These circles focus on helping students process emotions, identify root cause of problems, and helping to foster compassionate accountability. Mr. Davis takes teachers on a roller-coaster of storytelling that allows teachers to gain an understanding of what it might be like to be in some of their students’ shoes. During this conversation Mr. Davis will share why building relationships with students is the key to restorative justice. Although this is a fairly new concept Mr. Davis has added a few twists to it. He has implemented an aspect of joy and music to his overall approach.
