Bio

Complex topics delivered in plain English. Translating from technical buzzwords into digestible material for any audience.

I am an automotive engineer, trainer, and consultant, with over 25 years of experience as a powertrain calibrator for several major OEMs and the aftermarket high performance industry. My background and education is primarily in mechanical engineering (BSME with Automotive Specialty from GMI/Kettering University, 1999) and combustion systems. Engineering assignments had me working on the original Chevrolet Volt Hybrid fuel economy, evaporative leak detection on the 48 gallon fuel tank in the Ford F350, and torque control on Supercharged Dodge Hellcats.

As a former high performance shop owner, I tuned thousands of unique combinations. I have lots of first hand experience with the challenges faced by tuners and enthusiasts alike who are constantly looking for an edge when it comes to engine and powertrain controls. I've had the rare opportunity to work on some really interesting projects over the years ranging from 9-second drag racers to the latest in gasoline direct injection technology and hybrids. In recent years, the challenge has been to deliver performance while meeting modern emissions standards.

I have been teaching high performance fuel injection control since 2005. My first two books published in 2007 and 2009 continue to top the rankings in their genre on Amazon with over 90,000 copies sold worldwide and better than 4.5 star review ratings. My third book, released in 2023, focuses upon OBD and emissions. I have hosted classes across the US since 2005 and worked 1-on-1 with tuners, shop owners, and OEM engineers on a wide range of projects.

As part of my OEM career, I have done calibration, emissions, and management work for GM, Ford, Lotus, Roush, and FCA. Understanding how emissions work is done at the OEM level allows me to help other industries with fewer resources and a desire to learn.

Previous speaking engagements have included the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), Performance Racing Industry (PRI), Kettering University, University of California - Riverside, University of Northwestern Ohio, Automotive Engineering Technology Conference, Electric Vehicle Symposium, as well as countless private events and classes.

Achievements (2)
93 MPGe

As the fuel economy calibration engineer on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, I was proud to contribute to our overall EPA rating of 93MPGe, a high water mark for the industry. Our vehicles routinely ran over 100mpg when combining electrical charge and our optimized engine operation.

CARB Emissions Compliance

Starting with an off the lot Pickup truck that struggled to pass its original intended emissions target, I led a team that installed a supercharger that added over 150hp. The newly supercharged vehicle delivered superior emissions performance to the OEM sample when tested in 1065 lab conditions.

Emissions for Performance Calibrators

This session finally answers many of the questions we’ve encountered from our industry partners and clients over the years. Let’s face it, our industry is an easy target when it comes to compliance with the Clean Air Act. For years, we have always maintained that high performance and emissions compliance are not mutually exclusive. We’ve even worked on performance products from both the OEM and aftermarket certification sides. This class brings years of experience to the product manufacturer, shop tuner, enthusiast, or calibration engineer looking to deliver CARB legal calibrations for high performance systems and vehicles. Common failure points are examined while testing procedures and standards are explained in plain English.

Secretes of EFI Calibration

This is my most flexible, directly applicable presentation for almost anyone interested in spark ignited engine controls and performance. The lessons shown in this class can be easily aligned with almost any engine or control system out there. I don’t teach any secret ninja moves from the government, just solid applied physics and high school math.

What Does "No MIL" Really Mean?

This short talk briefly discusses the core functionality of the OBD-II and a few different ways that we measure in-use vehicle emissions. See how gross polluters and defeat devices are easily identified and learn what tools are available to start gathering local data that can indicate that a car is running clean. Parts manufacturers can use this to better prepare for CARB E.O. certification testing and increase their chances of passing on the first visit. Smaller shops can rest easier knowing that their work is less likely to draw the unwanted attention of enforcement personnel with affordable testing options. The goal is to continue the discussion of how high-performance shops and enthusiasts can continue to enjoy their cars while demonstrating emissions compliance in years to come.
