Meditation for Investment Professionals

An interactive session to demonstrate the power of meditation and mindfulness for investment professionals. In short, meditation is a hardware upgrade for the mind, not a software upgrade. Improve the hardware, and all of the software works better.

Here is what attendees will learn:
• The four biggest personal obstacles investment professionals face
• How meditation and mindfulness are powerful means to overcome these obstacles
• The difference between mediation and mindfulness
• The two key meditation skills

The major meditation styles, including everyday activities that increase mindfulness.

Creativity for Investment Professionals

Active investment managers are constantly on a quest to deliver alpha. Increasingly this is harder and harder to do with the success of passive investment strategies; increased competition in active strategies; increased amounts of, and access to, data; and unsympathetic clients. Yet, few investors realize that the definition of alpha is nearly identical to that of creativity.

This presentation demonstrates that creativity is not the exclusive purview of a gifted few. Specifically it covers the well-established neuroscience of creativity, and shares how investment professionals can implement the necessary conditions leading to more creative, alpha-enhancing performance.

Alpha Wounds

The investment industry has evolved in such a way that generating alpha is increasingly difficult for active investment managers. This presentation describes in detail how each of the major players in the investment ecosystem - from asset managers to asset owners to intermediaries to end clients - wound the ability of active managers to generate alpha. Equipped with this knowledge, active investment firms can implement changes to improve their performance.

Future State of Investing

Radical changes are afoot in the investment management industry affecting all firms. An overview of how very different 21st century finance is from 20th century finance provides a framework for understanding how to better compete and to seize new business opportunities.

For example, most investment firms have spent a disproportionate amount of executive attention to new product creation. But clients are already confused by their current offerings. Also, the only conversation most investment firms dare to have with their clients is about retirement. This presentation discusses new ideas about service innovations, and more client conversations to have beyond just retirement.

Overcoming Behavioral Biases

Investment managers are plagued by the classic behavioral biases of loss aversion, over-confidence, confirmation bias, mental accounting, anchoring, and representativeness bias. Sadly, despite a 50-year history of research, behavioral bias remains a diagnosis without a prescription. This presentation discusses three proven techniques for overcoming behavioral biases.

Return of the Active Manager

Based on the Harriman-House behavioral finance book, of which MarketPsych's Richard L. Peterson, M.D. said:

"Wow! I expected a terrific book from Howard and Voss, but ROAM knocked me back. It’s a once-a-decade genre-defining must-have-on-every-investor’s-bookshelf type of book. Read this and your wealth (and life!) will be wiser and smoother for it."

Topics covered include:
* Why active management is failing
* The major behavioral biases
* Behavior is alpha
* How to take advantage of behavioral biases to deliver alpha for the benefit of our end clients
