Bio

Jim Haudan is a different kind of CEO, with a passion that goes beyond leading Root to success. For more than 20 years, he has been helping organizations unleash hidden potential by fully engaging their people to deliver on the strategies of the business. With his background as a coach, it’s not a stretch that the company Jim co-founded focuses on tapping employees’ discretionary efforts – the kind that produces winning results.

From its headquarters in Sylvania, Ohio, and office in Chicago, Root partners with senior teams at major companies worldwide to build creative ways to execute strategy. A unique blend of 119 business experts, analysts, artists, writers, and educators, the Root team draws an organization’s people into the business by appealing to basic human curiosity and intelligence and by combining insights, art, visualization, and dialogue in innovative ways.

Jim believes that business results don’t come from creating a great strategy, but by meaningfully connecting it to all of the people in the company to bring it to life. And the Root team agrees, resulting in eight straight years on the Great Place to Work® Institute’s 25 Best Small and Medium Workplaces and being among the 2009 Top Small Workplaces according to the Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces Inc.

Root’s clients include some of the biggest names in business, such as Gap Inc., Petco,

Dow Chemical, Pepsi, FirstEnergy, Taco Bell, and Hilton Hotels – more than 500 companies and tens of millions of people.

In 2008, Jim wrote a national best-selling book in response to the impact that the Root methodologies and disruptive techniques have had on such a great number of people. "The Art of Engagement: Bridging the Gap Between People and Possibilities" reflects more than decades of lessons learned while working with some of the largest companies in the world.

Jim is a frequent speaker on leadership alignment, strategy execution, employee engagement, business transformation, change management, and accelerated learning, and has contributed to numerous business publications.

He lives in Sylvania with his wife Michelle. They have three children, Brad, Brooke, and Blake. When he’s not traveling the globe visiting clients, he enjoys relaxing with his family at their lake cottage, playing golf, fishing, photography and going to Jimmy Buffett concerts.

Creating Leaders as Change Agents

Businesses are undergoing transformations. Organizations' operations have changed radically in the last 10 years for a variety of reasons like globalization, technology advancements, shifting consumer behaviors, and workers' expectations. This requires leaders to adjust behaviors, cultures, processes, and policies - be change agents. In this interactive session, Jim outlines how functions like HR can facilitate and support leaders as change agents, including identifying the behaviors and competencies that enable leaders to be most successful.

The Art of Engagement

Most strategy isn’t understandable, and most engagement isn’t strategic for people. 70% percent of employees are disengaged, leaving billions of dollars on the table. Jim explores the concept of “engagement” in business and its importance in executing strategy by looking at how people learn and what holds them back from engaging/succeeding. In this interactive experience, he explains how organizations can close the gap between their aspirations and actual, tangible results by connecting people to strategy – and to each other – to enable every company to reach their strategic destination.

Leadership vs. Followership

In unprecedented numbers, followers are not buying what leaders are selling. When 84% of U.S. employees are looking for a new job and 70% are not actively engaged in their jobs, it becomes clear that leaders have forgotten the importance of followership. Jim’s session provides insights into creating a followership that results in sustained, positive motivation and change. Best practices such as reframing challenges, connecting employees to a future positive state, and telling easy-to-identify stories are the takeaways from this session.

Why Authenticity Matters

As power goes to the head, it may shut down the heart, separating us from the connections that allow us to be human. In this talk, Jim looks at the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in being a good leader. The heart of the talk lies in scientific research that finds the more powerful people become, the less empathetic and authentic they are as people and leaders. Jim brings us back to the importance of honesty, empathy and vulnerability in being a true leader.
