Hi. I'm Dr. Judy Cook and I have been involved in the field of medicine for nearly 50 years, and graduated with an MD from the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio Texas in 1973. I trained initially in Pathology but changed to Psychiatry after recognizing the importance of emotional health and well-being to people's physical health. As people learn to be happier, they are almost always healthier. I have been in the private practice of psychiatry since 1980 and have treated patients from age 4 to nearly a hundred for a wide variety of emotional and behavioral issues. I am quite knowledgeable in the use of psychiatric medications and have a great deal of awareness of the issues with side effects and interactions of both psychiatric and non-psychiatric drugs. However, my major focus is on helping people learn, through psychotherapy, how to understand and resolve those issues that have arisen from life's many emotional stressors. It has given me such great joy to watch thousands of people learn to master their 'demons' and move on to a happier, healthier more productive life, where they do things more in line with their dreams. It is amazing how psychotherapy seems to help 'fix' all those people out there causing your problems, and helps you adjust better to life's ups and downs.
It distresses me greatly to recognize that there are so many more people who want and need help that medication cannot give them, and may truly want and need psychotherapy they cannot afford. This has led to the decision to begin doing a lot more writing and speaking to reach out to larger numbers of people. You will find blogs and articles on this website, some radio show sound tracks, and information about my first book.
You will also have a chance to see some of my photos of orchids and travel destinations. I have been taking photos since childhood and the days of the Brownie box camera, and some of the orchid photos have been published in national orchid magazines. Orchids have been a passion as long as I have been in psychiatry. They bring a lot of beauty, joy and relaxation to life and have also taught a lot about the importance of adaptation, so don't be surprised to see a few 'lessons for happier living' inspired by the Orchid family.
I hope you will find the website fun and informative and will feel free to make suggestions of things you and others might want to learn about. ~Judy~
