Bio

Maybe Burke (she/her) is an artist, educator, published author, and public speaker with over a decade of experience changing hearts and minds through storytelling. She is interested in telling the stories that haven’t been told, and passionate about helping people unlearn the ways they’ve been taught to think.

As an educator, Maybe speaks all over the country, in person and virtually, about trans and queer identities. She has given keynote speeches, facilitated workshops and trainings, and spoken on many panels. This work has taken her from BroadwayCon to Buzzfeed, from High Schools to Universities, and from non-profits to large corporations. Maybe is also a sex educator with Sex Discussed Here!

Maybe is an award-winning writer and one of the co-authors of I ❤️ Orgasms, the latest gender inclusive sex ed book on pleasure and intimacy. Her solo show, Love Letters to Nobody, earned her the Fresh Fruit Spirit Award for Fostering Pride, Survival, History, and Progress as well as a nomination for the 2018 Doric Wilson Independent Playwright Award. Maybe also won the Fresh Fruit Festival's 2015 Short Play Contest with her first short play, Do You Want Me To Stop?, which then received a Fruitie for Outstanding Ensemble. An excerpt of the play was included in the second installation of Necessary Exposure: The Female Playwright Project.

Serving as the Artistic Associate of Honest Accomplice Theatre, Maybe founded The Trans Literacy Project, in which she collaborated with trans artists, advocates, and activists to produce accessible videos that address questions about and complexities of trans and non-binary experiences.

Her acting work has been featured on Netflix, Hulu, and Comedy Central, and has been seen on stage at 54 Below, Joe's Pub, Lincoln Center, Cherry Lane Theatre, Ars Nova, and more.

All Signs Point to Maybe

How do you know you’re transgender? With all the different words people can use for their gender, how do you find the one that works for you? What happens after you come out? Join Maybe Burke as she tells the story of growing to reject binary gender roles, choosing her own name, and staying true to herself. Through personal anecdotes and Q & A, Maybe works to break down her personal journey of coming into her identity as a way to foster an understanding of transgender people and inspire listeners to be true to themselves

Gender Inclusive Feminist Language

Womxn? Women+? How do we use expansive language when discussing what’s historically been known as “women’s issues”? Who are we including and why? Take a deep dive into inclusive language practices, the history and baggage that comes with some of the commonly heard alternatives, and plan for best practices moving forward.

Basics Beyond the Binary

Recent years have come with a rise in gender expansive conversations. But in a world that relies on restrictive binaries, many people don't know the history and significance behind non-binary communities and identities. This workshop will help participants attain a deeper understanding of how to affirm and respect non-binary people.

Media Representation of Trans & Nonbinary Characters

Since Laverne Cox was the face of “The Transgender Tipping Point” in 2015, there has been a rise in representation for trans and non-binary characters in TV, film, and theatre. Not all representation is positive representation, and many stories that are still being told today are using tired tropes and stereotypes about transgender and non-binary communities that are having negative impacts both for performers and audiences.
