Bio

Author and TED speaker, Nathaniel A. Turner, is a self-described “Humanity Propulsion Engineer.” Turner’s appeared in many media outlets, including The Washington Post, Black Enterprise, iHeartRadio, The Good Men Project, Sirius XM, and U.S. News & World Report. Corporations, municipalities, and NGOs like Anthem, Inc., National Collegiate Athletic Association, the City of Indianapolis, and the National Society of Black Engineers invite Nate to share his practical message for living the life we’ve always imagined while also serving the greater good.

A modern-day Renaissance Man, as evidenced by the diversity of his education, including a bachelor in accounting, masters in history and theology, and doctor of jurisprudence combined with a wide range of personal experiences and professions, are only part of what makes his wide-ranging presentations “can’t miss” events. What truly sets Nate apart from others is his unique oft times comical ability not only to see the world differently but to challenge his audiences in an edutaining way to live outside the box so that the world might be able to experience us at our very best.

As a zealous advocate that every person has an opportunity to maximize their human potential, Nate regularly shares through books, courses, workshops, and conferences a backward design life process initially created to help his unborn child become a great global citizen and meet the rigorous educational requirements of the top colleges and universities without means of wealth, privilege, legacy status, fraud, bribery, cheating or Adobe Photoshop. Today, those tools, techniques, and strategies initially created to help a Gen Zer thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution are educational and life development staples for students and parents of all ages, and organizations all over the country.

When you hear Nathaniel, not only will it be obvious why he is a highly sought after speaker, you will never be the same. Moreover, there is little doubt that those in the audience will leave with a renewed commitment to live the life they’ve always imagined while doing their part to leave the earth better than it was when they arrived.

"It’s Not Too Late; You Still Have Time!"

In 2012, Nathaniel A. Turner’s sixteen-year-old-son offered him words that now direct each day of his life. “Dad,” Naeem exclaimed, “you can do more; you still have time!” Nate not only received the instructional and encouraging message, but he took the teenager’s words to heart. Today, the TED Speaker is an author of several books, speaks at corporations and universities across the county, and writes for national and international publications. It would be an understatement to say Nate is doing more with his time. Part of “doing more” includes sharing the very same passionate declaration pronounced by his son and best friend for almost a decade. Nate doesn’t merely believe that we can all do more; he maintains that we must all do more. Join Turner as he shares a backward design process for living your best life so that “you can do more while you still have time.”

The Sky Is For Everyone

Have you ever wondered why some people are like elegantly soaring eagles while others are akin to pigeons loitering contently on the ground? Isn’t it strange that despite the sky being accessible to everyone, only the uncommon person spreads their wings to reach their maximum altitude and embrace the full vision of their best life? Participants will explore the detailed process for living your dreams – for flying higher than you could ever imagine. Come ready to ask and answer, “why coast with pigeons when you can soar with eagles?”

Solving the Puzzle of Generation: Empowering & Engaging Today's Students

This August D’Youville College will host an all-campus development day to foster a broad-based discussion on engagement, retention, empowerment, and student success among Generation Z students. The day is, in part, a response to the bestselling book The Coddling of the American Mind by Lukianoff and Haidt (2018). We will spend the day unpacking portions of this book to address the deficit mindsets on Gen Z. We hope to offer an optimistic and supportive outlook of Gen Z for our faculty and administrators as we prepare the college landscape to serve this population of students best. The day will include a keynote speaker, faculty presentations, roundtable sessions, and a multigenerational panel discussion.

Raising Diversity-Minded Kids

Find out why “Raising Diversity-Minded Kids” matters to EVERYONE and why doing so might be the most significant contribution a parent can make to the planet. Join Nathaniel A. Turner as he shares his three-step backward design process for preparing children to be productive members of the global and technological 21st Century. WARNING: This will not be another monotonous diversity and inclusion exchange. “Raising Diversity-Minded Kids is an interactive diagnosis about parenting and cure for the planet’s most infectious disease – humans lack of humanity.
● Discover how to measure a commitment to diversity and inclusion authentically.
● Understand how to create and maintain a lifelong competency in diversity and inclusion.
● Learn how Life vaccinates humans against the epidemic known as “lack of humanity.”

Be Humanity: The Challenge to be More Human

We are facing an existential threat – a series of unimaginable dangers that are rooted in our inability to be more human. We will examine why we are facing a crisis. And for the record, this is not another presentation about diversity, inclusion, and equity rather this is a template for how human beings must work together to put H-U-M-A-N back into humanity.

Black Economic History and Moving Forward

The wealthiest 100 households now own about as much wealth as the entire African American population in the United States. There are thirteen things the African American community must do if it ever wants to stop and potentially reverse the obscene wealth gap.

Diversity & Inclusion: The Inner Child Perspective

When it comes to the issues of diversity and inclusion, many Americans appear to both be sick and tired of the discussion and lost and confused about what to do next. The combination of being sick and tired and lost and confused has resulted in the “American Blame Game”. The game where everyone else is to blame for the state of the Union. And like every good American, with the assistance of Charlie Brown & the Peanuts Gang and Mr. Peabody and Sherman, I’m going to join in and play the game too. You want to know who to blame for the incivility of our society, blame adults and parents!

Re-Engineering the Village (R.E.V.)-An Authentic Discussion About Education

When it comes to educational strategies the African American community resembles a person driving around the country in a Model T while the rest of the world is driving a Tesla. If the African American community has aspirations of improving educational outcomes, we must look at the tacit rules and assumptions that underlie the way we build/sustain communities. We must start over – break away from conventional wisdom and constraints of outdated community models.

Rethinking Diversity: Moving Toward Inclusivity

Together we will explore whether diversity training programs have created or are able to create an inclusive environment in which each member of a represented community is valued, respected, and able to fully contribute their talents. Collectively we will investigate whether diversity training programs are changing attitudes of prejudice and bias, or whether diversity training programs are the catalyst for increased institutional hostility and escalating levels of social incivility. SPOILER ALERT: It’s time we rethink and redesign the way we imagine, prepare, engage, and facilitate diversity and inclusion EVERYWHERE.

Ten Things I Learned About Wealth Before My Thirteenth Birthday

According to the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test of financial literacy only about one in four students around the world can make even simple decisions on everyday spending and only one in ten can understand complex issues, such as income tax. It’s past time we gave children an instructional manual like the one my father gave me in 1975 when I asked for a red Schwinn ten speed.

Wake Up and Dream

I’m going to get you to check your pulse to find out bother literally and figuratively whether you are alive or dead. What will be written about you in your obituary? How will your life be described in your eulogy? What words will be engraved on your tomb/cemetery marker? Are you awake and dreaming or are you just like so many others who are already dead – zombies sleepwalking through this your only life?

Why It Might Be Time To Rethink (MOST) Everything You Believe About Diversity

A discussion about the flaws and ambiguity in the use of the word “diversity” from the perspective of a father who wonders how with all the attention and money spent on diversity, inclusion, and equity programs children like his son – who is modern day renaissance man (multilingual, multiliterate – coding languages, humanitarian, honor student, author, exceptional athlete, etc.) – would be forced to live in a Nation that has yet to solve homogeneity, inequality, and exclusion in post-secondary STEM educational opportunities and when it comes to pursuing a career in a STEM profession. Silicon Valley feel free to answer this question?

Your Money Matters

You attend college for four years preparing for the “real world.” Semester after semester, quarter after quarter, you're tested to make sure you have met the academic requirements of your major. During those four years, rarely are classes offered about the aspect of the “real world” – the one thing that you need to know and master for the rest of your life – your finances.
Although a lack of financial literacy has historically tormented minority graduates far more than other graduates, colleges and universities seldom see fit to make improving the financial acumen of any of its student's much less minority students a priority. Such oversight is criminal! And it’s time for us to correct this wrong.
“Your Money Matters” attendees will be introduced to some financial tools, techniques, and strategies that may improve your financial understanding and long-term economic standing. This workshop is for any student who doesn't want to be another statistical casualty.

It's Time to Use Your A.S.S. (Academic Success Strategy)
2 hours
(View workshop agenda)

Success does not happen by accident. Despite this truth, many students show up to class each day equipped with little more than the hope that they will do well. More than ever before, students need a detailed- proven academic process that can help them achieve their goals and reach their potential. Today's students need to use their A.S.S. (Academic Success Strategy) – a daily and weekly measurable academic process method. The A.S.S. is what practice and pre-game warmups are for the greatest athletes. All-Star and Hall of Fame athletes follow a specific, measurable routine. Shouldn't scholars?

More Than a Tag Line

Far too often, corporations find themselves in the news for the wrong reason. Be it corporate malfeasance, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, or the like leaders seem not to know the implications and significance of the corporate tagline. The corporate tagline is the compass that should at all time remind ALL employees about who they need to be and a prompt for companies to be who they proclaimed they would be when they were start-ups.

The college retention and graduation rates are embarrassing, and those rates are particularly disconcerting when it comes to historically underrepresented students. This presentation provides at-risk students a four-step process (Coordinates, History, Itinerary, and People) to not only navigate the educational journey but improve the likelihood of academic success.

It’s time to disrupt Parental Engagement the way Lamaze disrupted childbirth, like GPS disrupted transportation, as Sugata Mitra has disrupted education, and like Muhammad Yunus disrupted credit and finance. Utilizing the G.P.S., the ability to pilot a child’s future can be placed in the rightful hands of the people responsible for the child’s existence – the parents. And just like pilots, parents subscribing to the G.P.S. will be trained and continuously educated so that their passengers, the children, take off at the correct altitude, travel with minimum turbulence, and arrive at the desired destination on-time.

The Questions Universities Must Be Prepared to Answer

A discussion about the effects America’s changing complexion, the S.T.E.M. explosion, the employment trends of college graduates, the likelihood that student-athletes will "go pro" in something other than sports, state’s divestment in post-secondary education, etc. is having on traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities. The speaker offers sustainable solutions for an important but oft-ignored issue – the educational outcome and economic opportunities for the 98% of student-athletes who won’t “go pro” in a sport.

We Aren’t Raising Boys, We’re Training Men

An examination of the way we raise men with a contention that based on the state of the Union whatever we’ve done historically is not working. Backward Designing the Future

  • Last March, I chose to attend Nate’s, “It’s Not Too Late; You Still Have Time,” session at the virtual National Education Association Retired Conference. I came away so inspired by the story of how he raised his son to pursue his dreams and how his son, in turn, encouraged Nate to say yes to his dreams (of which there is no shortage!). Nate taught us how to ponder our best life, as well as how to use a vision board and daily journal writing to achieve our dreams. His message of we are never too old to start this process prompted me to ask him to speak at our Washington Education Association Retired Conference in September. Nate happily agreed to take on this speaking assignment, and in the process, he was so easy to communicate with. He met with our WEA-Retired president and me virtually to discuss our conference, and his kindness and generosity in supporting our efforts came through in the emails we exchanged. He not only agreed to be our keynote speaker, but he allowed us to use his topic for our theme as well. This set the tone for our entire conference. From our virtual meeting and email communications, to his presentations at both conferences, working with Nate has been such a positive and memorable experience!

  • Nathaniel Turner was invited to speak at our 2019 all campus development day at D'Youville College in Buffalo, NY. I had the distinct honor of meeting Nathaniel the day before and spending some time with him and his wife, Mrs. Latonya Turner. I consider myself absolutely honored to have had two days in their presence. The wealth of knowledge and expertise on important contemporary social, economic, parenting, and academic issues that Nathaniel possesses is invaluable and enlightening. He was gracious, generous with his time, patient with administrative issues, and most importantly he is humble and passionate. He genuinely believes in the messages he speaks about. He met with my colleague and I via phone conferences to establish the content our school community was hoping to have input on, and he designed a speech specifically for our school climate as it reflect national academic and economic trends. The keynote was well received and raved about across campus, and without him the day would not have been successful. Thank you, Mr. Turner, for everything.

  • Nathaniel Turner spoke for our Campus Development Day at D’Youville. His presentation titled, “Solving the Puzzle of Generation Z” was a critical piece of the day. It helped set the foundation and open communication, so we could have a fruitful discussion on the best way to inspire and support our future leaders throughout their time at college. His presentation style was interactive and engaging because of his down to earth, yet professional personality. I also thank Nate and his team for their insight and participation in the small group discussions. His knowledge and passion for the topic have helped me (and others in attendance) recognize that the time to change is now. I look forward to hearing more from Nathaniel Turner.

  • Nate delivered an exceptional presentation on "Raising Diversity Minded Kids" at the Indianapolis Integrating Women Leaders conference. This was actually his second appearance at the conference. The feedback from his first presentation in 2017 was so positive that he was invited back to speak again. The room was engaged, the session was interactive, and he had a line of attendees that wanted to speak with him after he was done. Not only was his content spot on, but his genuine passion is undeniable. Nate's mission is to leave the world a better place and he's doing just that with the message he shares. Nate is the kind of speaker you don't forget.

  • Wow, a must experience message from a truly gifted gentleman who guided the audience on a much needed journey of self-reflection. Moreover, Nate taught everyone who was present how to soar past mediocrity by reclaiming your wings and your ability to fly simultaneously. What a gift for me to finally regain after spending years a pigeon self-grounded and waiting for someone else to feed me. Somehow, thanking him is not enough but I hope that my actions moving forward will be. Sincerely, Dana Foster
