Our Colorblind Blind Spot: Unlocking Inclusive Design
This is a talk about color blindness. But more than that, this is a talk about putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes — our audience, our customers, our friends and coworkers. I didn't realize I was forgetting 8% of my male audience until a coworker brought an issue to my attention: our manager was colorblind and wouldn't be able to read a spreadsheet I made. I had an Oprah aha! moment and started obsessively researching how to design for color-blindness. Now I'm sharing how we can all make more thoughtful choices, which starts with understanding our audience. I show you how color-blindness works and give you a taste of what the world looks like when you have it. Next, I teach you easy steps to take to avoid creating hard-to-see content, like using contrast and embracing minimalism. Finally, I show you more advanced tools for creating your own color palettes and testing your graphics for accessibility.
