In the summer of 2001, I was appointed principal of one of the worst schools in Minnesota. The school was restructured and the entire staff was asked to reapply for their jobs. In 2001 19% of our kids were at or above standard according to statewide testing. In three years, we improved test scores from 19% and increased that number to 76% of our students were at or above standard. I have spoken throughout the country regarding the success and the strategies our school used to improve and make AYP. I have also talked to principals all over the country about how important Instructional Leadership is to the principal-ship.
