Truama, Disability and Me “People often ask me a simple question: What was your diagnosis growing up? The truth is that the answer is not simple. This is because eventhough I have a physical disability, I did not feel‘disabled’ but I didn’t feel able-bodied either. People and society shoved me into a box, and when you’re a child, that’s not a neutral place to be. The negative perceptions of others were imposed on me to such an extent that I eventually believed that they originated from me. If you can’t name your experience, you can’t explain it, you can’t validate it and you can’t find where you belong. So instead, you adapt. You watch. You try to fit. Over time, that constant not-knowing does not just stay in your thoughts but it settles in your body. I didn’t have language for that back then and years later, when I developed tinnitus, something shifted when I began to examine my trauma. Suddenly, there was something I could point to. Even then the frameworks didn’t quite hold. I began to realise that my experience as a girl growing up with a physical disability left emotional scars as well. It was only when I began the recovery journey from tinnitus that I could make sense of this emotional trauma that my physical disability brought me. Not waiting to be included One of the things that has always puzzled me is how often discussions about disability focus on what able-bodied people are doing wrong. In my experience, able-bodied people are not the problem. That statement surprises some people, but it reflects my reality. When I want to attend an event, I check whether the venue is wheelchair accessible. If it is, I go. I introduce myself. I join the conversation. I participate. Most of the time, people are welcoming, friendly, and interested in getting to know me. They do not treat me as an outsider. They treat me as another person in the room. Of course, I have encountered inaccessible venues, awkward interactions, and people with misconceptions about disability. Those experiences exist. But they have not defined my life. What has defined my life is the decision to stop waiting. I stopped waiting for society to discover me. I stopped waiting for someone to invite me. I stopped waiting for permission to participate. I simply started showing up. What I find interesting is that many disabled people speak about exclusion, yet I rarely see them at mainstream events. Then, when there is a disability conference or disability awareness event, they suddenly appear in large numbers. Why is that? It is a question worth exploring. Have they been discouraged by others? Have negative experiences convinced them they do not belong? Have they become more comfortable in disability-specific spaces than in the wider community? I do not claim to know the answer. What I do know is that blaming other people has never improved my life. There is no one responsible for what I do except me. The moment I accepted responsibility for participating in society, everything changed. I became more visible, more connected, more confident, and more successful. My disability did not disappear. The barriers did not disappear. But my approach changed. This talk challenges the idea that inclusion is something that is given to us by others. Sometimes inclusion begins with a decision to show up, speak up, and take our place in the world. My message is simple: if we want to be part of society, we have to participate in it. Not someday. Not when conditions are perfect. Now.
