James is an Australian marathon swimmer. He was the first Australian to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming – the English Channel, the Manhattan Island Marathon, and the Catalina Channel and in the process became the first blind person to complete each of these events. He has successfully completed a marathon swimming event in all continents excluding Antartica and ironically, in 2013, he joined a contingent of 66 swimmers from around the world to swim an arctic relay across the Bering Strait from Russia to the USA and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Records. In addition to swimming, James has represented his country in rowing at the 1995 World Rowing Championships in the disabled category.
