I grew up in the foothills of Appalachia. One of the hardest-hit areas of the opioid epidemic. Its reach has no boundaries. It has touched everyone in my community in some form or fashion, including me and my family. My story is not unique in the aspect of active addition. Like so many, I first became addicted by being prescribed copious amounts of pain meds, in which I was very naive to their long-term effects. Some really horrific things had to happen to get me where I am today, but I will save that for my testimony. My main objective is to be heard. To serve as a light in a very dark and lonely world of addiction. To advocate for the lost and broken. To change the narrative and stigma that surrounds addiction and Appalachia. To be a voice for the next generation, that is being raised by their grandparents, Because both parents are incarcerated and not receiving the correct treatment they need to achieve long-term recovery. Or worse their parents have died from an overdose. Those kids are our future for a change and we don't have any resources implemented for them to break this perpetual cycle. I need a platform in which I can speak and it impacts everyone willing to listen. To be heard by the judicial system that addicts do not need to be locked up in a prison but rehabilitated, taught a trade that brings meaning to their lives and hope. Recovery isn't about learning how not to use, it is about finding a life that you no longer want or need to escape from.

I am a survivor of sex trafficking as well as a recovering addict and felon. I grew up and lived my whole life in Detroit. I have told my story on FM radio, Buzzsprout, Amazon Music, Deezer, Spotify and more. I have a social media following (really a survivors army) of over 70,000. I tell my story in hopes that those who find themselves at risk are more apt to know what to look out for. Most importantly though, I tell my story so that those who have been in similar situations, or still are, know that they are not alone. I truly believe that the issue of trafficking is greatly ignored and walked right over. There are not sufficient resources to help those who have been in, or are in this situation. I feel that if I don’t speak out nobody will. One of the biggest problems in this world is that so many people seem to think that if it doesn’t directly affect them or theirs than it doesn’t really matter. Yeah, until it does. It’s time to wake the up world up to the real issues out there. For example, we had to fight for addiction awareness, and we got at least somewhere there. Why can’t we fight for this? I have been raped, beaten, sold and had everything that can be taken from a women, taken from me. In my opinion, the worst thing a person can go through is to be sexually assaulted. It takes your very soul from you. This can be seen in a lot of my media videos (attached to my profile) as well as can be heard my radio interview (also attached in media). I would not wish this experience on my worst enemy. Having gone through being sexually assaulted more times than I can count, I have learned to deal with it. I want to help others be able to keep living after going through something like this, but more importantly, I want to do as much as I can to prevent this. Whether it be date rape, being assaulted walking down the street, or even and especially sex trafficking. I only wish I knew the things then, that I know now, but at least I can help others with the information that I have now.

I am a 22 year old senior communication major at Kennesaw State University. At the age of 12 I was raped. I kept my attack a secret from all those around me while letting my own emotions eat away at the person I was. I found myself falling into dangerous paths and making poor decisions as the love I once had for myself, no longer existed. At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with eating disorders. My body chose food as a way to cope and it soon became my version of self harm. I wanted to become invisible. I wanted to be seen as undesirable in the eyes of society at the time. At the age of 16, information of my traumatic experience was accidentally revealed to my parents. I was not prepared for the love and understanding reactions they had. When you are 12 years old, you do not understand the true meaning of Rape. You may understand it is something in movies but surely it does not exist in real life. Shortly after my parents finding out about my past, I was diagnosed with PTSD. My neglect toward towards myself by keeping my experience to myself cause flashbacks and recurring trauma. After this diagnosis, I began seeing therapist and doctors regularly to help ease the struggles of PTSD. Fast forward to 18 years old. I gained the confidence in myself and my surroundings to go off to college. What is supposed to be the most exciting years of your life, became what I feared most. My freshman year I was raped for the second time. This time I was going to handle my trauma the "right" way. I immediately told a close friend and together we went to Campus Police. I was not prepared for the reaction of being told "It is your word against his, go home and get over it." I transferred schools shortly after that as I no longer felt safe in a community that does nothing to help victims. I believe everything happens for a reason. I have been through many traumatic experiences with combined thoughts of suicide and never given up. My goal is to share my story, to educate people that these things can happen, to show people they are not alone. I attend schools, churches, organizations, etc. with my PTSD service dog to educate and inform. I look forward to sharing my story with you.
