Luke Burgis is an entrepreneur and investor whose unique perspective on business stems from diverse experiences working on Wall Street, founding companies in Silicon Valley, and studying classical philosophy, theology, and literature. He worked in corporate finance and venture capital in New York and Hong Kong before starting his first business in 2005. After launching several successful businesses at a young age, Luke began to contemplate the deeper purpose of entrepreneurship. His journey brought him to the intersection of faith and human flourishing, which transformed the way that he thought about business. His person-centered approach to economics and entrepreneurship has contributed to award-winning company cultures and innovation. Luke is currently Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC where he is spearheading new ventures in education, leading student programming and partnerships with local businesses, and co-teaching the most popular course at the university. Luke is recognized for his "spiritual entrepreneurship" as the co-founder of ActivPrayer, a fitness company that provides coaching and training programs based on spiritual principles; and Inscape, an organization that trains mentors to help young people discover and live out their callings. He is co-author of the book "Unrepeatable: Cultivating the Unique Calling of Every Person", and the author of the forthcoming book, "Wanting: Our Secret of Economy of Desire" about the role of mimetic desire in the economy and in organizations. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, America Magazine, and Forbes, among others. He holds degrees from the Stern School of Business at New York University and the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. Luke lives in Washington, DC and travels often. Aaron Abend is a software entrepreneur whose company helped academic medical centers apply clinical data from Electronic Health Records to medical research. His company, Recombinant Data, was acquired in 2012. In 2013, Mr. Abend became interested in autoimmune disease after being approached by a biotech with a new treatment for lupus. He declined that opportunity, but shortly after, his mother was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome (after living 10 years with classic symptoms). He discovered the poor state of knowledge about autoimmune diseases and decided to build a national registry modeled on the National Cancer Registry. I studied at the University of the West Indies for four years where I not only obtained a Bachelor's of Science in International Relations Spanish and Economics, but also garnered life experiences and knowledge that have been the impetus for my advancement and key to my ingenuity. After graduation I returned home as I was offered a permanent full-time job with Air Jamaica and for the next year and approximately eight months I was employed permanently. I was then laid off and the incredulous journey of research began. I was offered a contract position at UWI in the office of the Campus Principal. I served my time as the Research Assistant to the Planning Officer. After my contract ended I stayed in Kingston and utilized all my professional, customer service training skills to freelance in research. I landed a contractual position with Etude Economic assisting their Country manager in liaising with managers of Small Medium and Large companies to secure interviews to be conducted. After each round of interviews I prepared daily reports. After that project ended I worked on a project with a colleague in Trinidad collecting data for Market Research and doing data entry. I then worked with Asisa,I was a research assistant for a focus group in Jamaica.
