About Gavin Mageni - A professional International Speaker by Pholisa Magqibelo (Senior Manager: SABS DI) Gavin Mageni, as he so fondly wants to be known as, is just another somebody who is trying to re-direct the course of South Africa's economic regression. As a well-rounded leader he led many teams to success and relevance across both the Private Sector (Financial Services Industry) and the Public Sector (Government Technical Agency). As part of the Africa Marketing Executive Management team, Gavin gained invaluable exposure throughout the African continent in his roles with Absa and Barclays Africa. His Strategic leadership capabilities were tested in his keen ability to integrate Strategic Marketing, Business Development, Communication and Corporate Affairs - a capability which is still lacking on the African continent. In his view, the ability to generate sustainable value at a consistent pace is a key imperative often sacrificed by the need for immediate gratification by short-term gains. He further states that business leaders underestimate the power that lies in the principles "doing the basics right and money will follow", "securing the foundations: being consistent and staying committed to your people" and "protecting institutional memory". Besides the many accolades and achievements, his philosophy was put to the test in his task to implement a turnaround strategy for the SA Design Institute, which forms part of the Department of Trade and Industry, South Africa. The Institute is currently a 50 year old institution which formed an essential part of local industrialization and innovation. Staying true to his philosophy, he managed to implement a turnaround strategy in less than 18 months, catapulted the entity from government grant dependency to self-sustainable revenue generation. Under his leadership he led the team, without dedicated business development experts, to secure more than R150m for the implementation of client value propositions within the sphere of Design Innovation Entrepreneurship and ED/SD localization.

I was born in Winslow, AZ, while my parents did voluntary service on the Hopi Reservation, through the Mennonite Church (An Anabaptist Christian Denomination). When I was just a few months old, we moved to Pennsylvania, where my parents cared for my grandfather, at the end of his life. Just 3 years later, we moved to Jamaica, where they again were serving through the Mennonite Church. After 3 years in Jamaica, we moved to Florida, and just a year after that, we moved to Indiana. Each of those moves found my dad employed with a Mennonite organization. The Mennonite Church strongly influenced my childhood and provided a foundation from which I developed values in self-responsibility, stewardship of resources, compassionate living, and being the change I wish to see in the world. This foundation has led me to explore Faith-Based Ministry: leading workshops, preaching and teaching and developing opportunities for participants to deepen into their own relationship with God through spiritual transformation. Although I am no longer participating in the Mennonite Church, I am active in my spiritual life and deepening into Spirit continues to be a foundational theme to the work that I do. I often refer to this at "Grace" or as "that which is greater than we are". I do not have a religious agenda, but do believe in a spiritual dimension that conspires for our good. I have been called a Contemplative and a Mystic. I have been called the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. I believe that we are all invited to expand love within our selves and then ripple that love out to the world. I am able to relate to Christians and non-Christians, people from "new-age" religions and rich spiritual philosophies. Beyond the spiritual connections that I foster, I am a teacher. I have both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Education and taught in traditional school environments for over 10 years. I also have a background as a Certified Personal Trainer and ran my own business training people's physical bodies and leading workshops around the country. Most recently, I have gone through Leadership Development Training and Advanced Leadership and Facilitation Training through a Personal Growth and Transformation organization called COR (www.CORexperience.com). I have faced infertility, been a foster mother, gone through divorce, remarried, parent step-children, faced the possibility of a second divorce, battled Anxiety and Mental Health stigmas. With all that I've experienced in life, I know the power and freedom available when we allow ourselves to be in the present moment, with whatever is at hand. I now create space to slow down, to be with what is, to tap into the innate intelligence that is in our bodies and to transform our relationship with our own heart, body, mind and spirit. It is about coming home within ourselves and welcoming in parts that we have wanted to disown or didn’t even realize were impacting us in a negative way.

While my personal journey is unique to me, it is not extraordinary within the circle of humanity. Just like every soul on this planet, I have moved through periods of darkness and of light. The lessons I have learned through my experiences, however, are not unique – they are universal. Honoring my truth, honoring relationships, cultivating forgiveness, compassion, and acceptance are the highest, most valued treasures of living a passionate, purposeful, heart-centered, and authentic life. I believe there is immense value within the experiences of darkness. There is dignity in the personal process of gathering life’s lessons on the journey, as there is a higher purpose served, and exquisite gifts are bestowed along the way. The gifts of my life’s journey through darkness brought me to a place of deep self-inquiry. Coming through the other side of the darkness, I inquired within myself about the ways in which I could serve the greatest good of the souls who were brought within my sphere of influence. I inquired how I could facilitate positive change in my corner of the world using my strengths, skills, and gifts gained through my personal experiences. Knowing now that my purpose is to ignite and inspire, I utilize my abilities and talents to connect heart-to-heart and to facilitate inspiration and empowerment in others by guiding them to their own source of inner wisdom. Expanding upon my life experiences and through formal education, I have purposefully broadened my knowledge, skills, and healing experiences. This has served to create the foundation of expressing my life’s passion and purpose through a heart-centered career as a Mind-Body Wellness Practitioner. I speak of possibilities and potential.

While growing up even from childhood, i always wondered why i feel saddened seeing people living below standard. Going through high school, gaining a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering and diving fully into Information Technology studies as i went in for a post-graduate study and attained several professional IT certificates, did not affect my passion for speaking and encouraging people to live their best life and be successful in discovering their true purpose and fulfilling it. Rich experiences gained from living life generally and coming from a family of five with just two of us alive presently has helped in shaping me to be more passionate about people living life purposefully and not just existing. I strongly desire to see people especially young teenagers and youths make the right decision as they go through the different phases of life. I am glad to say that i have spoken in a number of meetings and seminars among young people. Sharing the right knowledge about making the right decisions, living a purpose-driven life, achieving true success in life, leadership qualities, managing relationships and general management skills is not just a drive for me, it is a passion and my purpose for living. I aim at speaking to more and more people all over the world about these things. Impacting the world positively by building and sharing these knowledge, and helping people understand these principles give me great fulfillment. Feel free to contact me if you would like to know more.
