I became a manager back in 2000 & thought I knew how to manage people. Apparently not because I got intense push back. It took me several years to figure out the best way to engage the staff, what I needed to do to change my approach when it came to implementing change, having tough conversations (that no one wants to have) and making decisions not everyone would be thrilled about. It wasn't until 8 years later when I came across Emotional Intelligence & realized that was the skill I had developed and was utilizing. I have used this skill ever since with great success. I can confirm Tom Peter's comment "Success in business today is 15% technology and 85% Emotional Intelligence" is without a doubt true. After 20 years, I continue to work with leaders, women and youth in developing this skill.
