Kevin Alderson, PhD, is a professor emeritus of counselling psychology from the University of Calgary Dr. Alderson is a highly-respected counselling and clinical psychologist in the counselling and psychotherapy field with over 30 years of direct experience.
He is President of the College of Alberta Psychologists until September 2019, the regulatory body for psychological practice in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Alderson is a professional member of the Association for Addiction Professionals, and currently sits on the editorial board for the Journal of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse & Substance Dependence and the Austin Journal of Drug Abuse and Addiction. He also holds membership in the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and the Canadian Psychological Association. Since 2008, Dr. Alderson has been the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy, which is the only national peer-reviewed journal in the counseling and psychotherapy field in Canada. He currently works half-time for Yorkville University as their director for a proposed online doctor of counselling and psychotherapy degree program.
Dr. Alderson is an author of 10 books and is a recognized expert in addictions, hypnotherapy, and sexology. Regarding addictions, he specializes in substance (including drugs and alcohol) and behavioural addictions (e.g., gambling, sex, Internet, online gaming). He has written a textbook for Sage Publications, one of the leading publishers of textbooks in the United States, called Addictions Counseling Today: Substances and Addictive Behaviors, which will be released December 2019. He completed a MSc in clinical, school, and community psychology from the University of Calgary, and a PhD in counselling psychology at the University of Alberta. Dr. Alderson is married and is the father of two adult children. Outside of counselling, he enjoys racket sports, dancing, hiking, camping, and weight training.
