Beyond the Diagnosis: From Surviving Schizoaffective Disorder to Becoming a Mental Health Professional
Keynote, Workshop, Training • 60 minutes
What does recovery really look like when you're living with a serious mental illness? In this inspiring and honest presentation, I share my journey of living with schizoaffective disorder and the challenges of navigating psychosis, mood episodes, hospitalization, stigma, and the uncertainty that often comes with a serious mental health diagnosis. For years, survival was my greatest achievement. I never imagined that one day I would dedicate my life to helping others recover. Through the power of treatment, peer support, resilience, and purpose, I transformed my lived experience into a career in mental health. Today, I am a mental health professional, nonprofit founder, advocate, and Master of Social Work student who uses both personal and professional experience to bridge the gap between clinical care and authentic understanding. This presentation challenges the misconceptions surrounding serious mental illness while demonstrating that recovery is not only possible—it can lead to a life filled with purpose, leadership, and service. Audiences will gain insight into the realities of living with schizoaffective disorder, the importance of hope-centered care, the value of peer support, and how lived experience can strengthen mental health systems. Whether speaking to healthcare professionals, students, community organizations, or individuals in recovery, this keynote leaves audiences with a renewed understanding that a diagnosis does not define a person's future. Recovery isn't about returning to who you were before—it's about discovering who you can become.

From Survival to Service: Turning a Near-Death Experience into a Mission of Hope
60 minutes
What happens when you're told you may not survive—and if you do, your life will never be the same? In this powerful and inspiring keynote, I share my journey of surviving a near-death experience caused by serious mental illness that resulted in a brain injury and three weeks in the intensive care unit. When I woke up, I had lost the ability to perform even the most basic tasks. I had to teach myself how to walk, talk, swallow, use the restroom, and ultimately how to live again. Because of my brain injury, I had no memory of what had happened to me. It wasn't until I learned to read again and reviewed my own medical records that I fully understood the magnitude of what I had survived. Rather than allowing my story to end there, I made the decision to transform my pain into purpose. Despite being told I might not live—and later that recovery would take years—I returned to work just three months after leaving the hospital. Four months after coming home, I founded J&E Support Group, a nonprofit dedicated to providing hope, peer support, and advocacy for individuals living with mental health challenges. My mission became bigger than my own recovery: to help others believe that healing, purpose, and a meaningful future are possible. Today, I am pursuing my Master of Social Work at one of the nation's top-ranked public MSW programs, supported by prestigious scholarships and recognized with multiple awards for my advocacy and community impact. This presentation is more than a story of survival. It is a testament to resilience, the power of lived experience, and the belief that even life's darkest moments can become the foundation for meaningful change. Audiences will leave inspired to rethink recovery, embrace hope, and recognize that every challenge has the potential to become a catalyst for purpose.
