Bio

Sam Anthony is a professional speaker in long term recovery from substance use disorder, who uses his personal experiences with drugs, alcohol, depression, anxiety, suicidal behavior, recovery, mental fitness, spiritual fitness and physical fitness to educate and motivate others.

He took his first drink at 12 years old as a means of hiding his anxiety and depression, in addition to trying to fit in with his peers. As he puts it, “I don’t know what you thought about me, but I was really concerned with what I thought, you thought about me.”

He moved on to smoking weed and trying pills in high school, what he refers to as gateway behavior, and that led him down a path of destruction. Running away from his problems, he left New Jersey and moved south in hopes of starting over. But, everywhere he went, there he was.

What started off as self-medication turned into a vicious cycle or addiction leading to an overdose that landed him on life support in 2013. Thinking he could still function without help and counseling, he then continued an unhealthy lifestyle and subsequently was arrested and sentenced to 3 years in jail in 2015.

Since that time, and now in recovery, Sam has passionately shared his story with thousands of high school and college students, health care professionals, and government officials through motivational talks, school assemblies and panel discussions. Sam's mission is to inspire others, provide hope for the future and educate our youth through sharing his vulnerability. Sam’s message emphasizes awareness and encouragement. He lives in Virginia with his loving wife Rachel and two sons, Micah and Malachi. With regards to his family he says, “I’d be dead literally and figuratively if not for the love of my wife. I’m grateful to have two boys who have never seen their father take a drink or a drug.”

Sam will speak anywhere he is invited.

4. It’s okay to tell for someone when they are too scared to speak for them-self

6. The best pieces of advice I've ever received…..

And much much more…..

There Are Two Types of Parents, Which One Are You?

Parent Keynote

Sam believes there are two types of parents.

The first parent thinks that their child is amazing they’re never gonna suffer from depression, my kids not getting bullied, and they definitely won’t experiment with drugs or alcohol. The second parent just has no idea.

He feels that his parents fell into both categories. They never thought not for one second that sweet, innocent little Sammy would take a drink from the liquor cabinet at 12 years old. But when he did, they had no idea. If they did, they had no idea how to handle the situation.

Would you?

Let him educate your parents:

1. The reality that there is no gateway drugs, only gateway behavior which is often a symptom of learned behavior.

2. It’s called learned behavior for a reason. Learning is a part of education and education starts at home.

3. Don’t be one of the parents that had no idea

4. A few things my parents wish they knew

5. How to spot the onset of changes in behavior and what to do about them

Is It Odd or Is It God?

Faith-Based Keynote

When Sam got sober, he said to himself, “I found God.”

That wasn’t true, God wasn’t lost, Sam was. God found him.

The real truth was that he turned his back on God, but God never turned His back on Sam.

There are too many divine elements of his story that he can’t share in public schools; so he’s humbled and grateful when gets to show off the glory of what God has done in his life.

You may be asking yourself, “What has He done Sam?”

Well let him tell you. He has taken the ugliest, darkest, filthiest moments of Sam’s life and not only fixed them, but He turned them into something beautiful.

Allow Sam to bring this life changing testimony to your community and congregation and he guarantees you will say, “it’s the best assembly you ever hosted!”

By the end of his testimony your audience will fully understand that sometimes God will not meet our expectations, because He plans on exceeding them.

I am a Person – People are Not Disposable

Community & Recovery Keynote

Sam broke his anonymity about his disease on a socio-economic level after his overdose in 2013. He was done hiding because of the stigma surrounding addiction and wanted people in his community and now around the world to know that there is indeed hope in recovery.

Sam relapsed in 2015 and after his arrest they called him a junkie and wanted to lock him up. He’s not a junkie he’s a person and people are not disposable.

He finally sought help for his substance use disorder for the last time in 2015 and they told him if he got sober and he stayed sober that his dreams would become reality.

Well he will be the first to tell you, that was a lie.

Here’s why.

Sam is living proof that if you get sober and you stay sober, your reality will actually surpass your dreams.

Allow Sam to bring this life changing message to your community and he guarantees you will say, “it’s the best event you ever hosted!”

  • The staff from the Loudoun County Prevention/Intervention team would like to thank Sam for coming out and speaking to our high school youth at Camp R.E.A.L. (Raising Education, Achievement and Leadership)! Sam did an amazing job and received great feedback from the youth. The youth listened to his story intently and engaged with several questions at the end. The youth stated he was one of their favorite guest speakers! They also enjoyed when he came to participate in some of the recreational activities. We look forward to having him come back and speak! Thank you Sam! • “Sam is an honest, engaging, and relatable speaker. He shares why he began using drugs and alcohol as a teen, where his addiction led him, his journey to recovery, and where he is today; grateful and sober. Sam’s story is inspiring, helps to break down the stigma surrounding addiction, and encourages those suffering to seek help. I look forward to collaborating with Sam to reach more youth.”
