Sam flew on combat air assault missions over the Zagros Mountains of Northern Iraq providing humanitarian relief and security to Iraq’s Kurdish people; and he led a WMD team in search of Iraq’s hidden arsenal of weapons—capable of mass destruction. Sam is a veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort and is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sam’s leadership experiences include holding every NCO leadership position in an Army company, with six consecutive years as a small unit leader. Following that, Sam served as a Drill SGT, then basic training Company 1SG. Afterward, he was assigned to be 2nd Infantry Division Headquarters Support Company 1SG in the Republic of Korea. 1SG Lewis’s final leadership position was Team Sergeant for a 14 Soldier specialized joint CBRNe and EOD response team; Sam’s team deployed to Iraq to cover the whole theater of operations. 1SG (Ret.) Lewis’s highest military award is the Bronze Service Star.
