1Degree of Separation was founded by comedian and mental health advocate Brad Bonar Jr., whose mission is to transform the way people talk about depression, suicide, and mental health. Drawing from his own lifelong experience with depression, Brad created an innovative suicide prevention training program that combines clean comedy with raw, honest conversations about mental health in order to break stigma and save lives. For nearly 30 years, Brad has performed professionally as a stand-up comedian and magician, entertaining audiences around the world with his clean, relatable humor. His comedy career includes corporate events, theaters, comedy clubs, and a successful Dry Bar Comedy special that has earned millions of online views. But behind the laughter, Brad privately struggled with depression for decades — a reality that ultimately inspired him to launch 1Degree of Separation in 2019. Today, Brad leads the nonprofit as both a speaker and educator, delivering suicide prevention and mental health training to schools, corporations, healthcare organizations, military installations, first responders, and communities across the country. Under his leadership, 1Degree of Separation has reached tens of thousands of people through its signature program, “A Funny Look at Depression and Suicide,” which uses humor and vulnerability to create safe, meaningful dialogue around mental health. Central to Brad’s message is the importance of asking what 1Degree of Separation calls the “5 Questions” — simple but powerful questions designed to help people recognize emotional distress, start difficult conversations, and connect struggling individuals with support before a crisis escalates. Brad teaches that many people who are suffering silently simply need someone willing to notice, ask, and genuinely listen. These questions have become a cornerstone of the organization’s training programs and have already been credited by participants with helping intervene in real-life suicide crises and save lives. By empowering everyday people — coworkers, friends, family members, supervisors, teachers, and community leaders — to confidently engage in compassionate conversations, Brad has helped create a practical framework for prevention that people can immediately apply in their personal and professional lives. Brad’s work has received national recognition through appearances on PBS NewsHour, regional media outlets, and presentations for military and Department of Defense audiences. His approach is built around a simple but powerful belief: laughter lowers defenses, making it easier for people to have life-saving conversations. As Brad often says, “Comedy is universal… and if we can laugh at this, we can talk about it.” 1degreeofseparation.life

I’m a neurophilosopher and author based in Canada, and I work at the intersection of mind science and human agency. In my writing and teaching, I introduce a practical way to understand why our thoughts, behaviors, habits, and skills feel automatic—like a self-driving system—while also clarifying the real choice we still have as the driver. I help people move from confusion and self-judgment to clarity and control by using the framework behind my book, The Self-Driving You. Listeners learn how to notice their self-driving responses, take the wheel to override them, and then rewire their patterns so they can consistently steer toward success, balance, and the life they actually want.

For more than 25 years as a Registered Nurse working in high-acuity environments, Annie Athmer learned that waiting for outcomes was never an option. Intervention happened based on signal. Today Annie translates that same pattern recognition into a practical and transferable lens that helps individuals, teams, and organizations recognize early indicators of drift, compensation, and hidden strain before visible outcomes force the conversation. Her work sits at the intersection of systems thinking, decision architecture, human behavior, and organizational transformation.
