Following graduation from college,at the age of 20, with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from West Virginia University, I have had a 40-year career in journalism, public relations, philanthropy and teaching. Matt almost lost his marriage and family and was battling suicidal thoughts when his deep depression and reckless behaviour led to his arrest whilst at work in 2015. The following years resulted in intense recovery, working through a serious identity crisis and challenging his core values. Matt now works as a Mental Health Advocate for emergency services and military personnel using his lived experience to encourage difficult conversations around mental health self-awareness in attempts to change organisational culture. I am a survivor and I talk about it. I allowed the pain and trauma of being kidnapped and held hostage for 5 months while pregnant to control me. I escaped my kidnapper and hired a bodyguard to protect me and my 3-month-old child. I fell in love with my bodyguard and married him. 15 years later we tell our story worldwide to help others see there is life after trauma. It was not until I looked inward and saw that the pain that I refused to accept was fogging my reality, that I could let go and heal. I began telling my story publicly two years ago and have since been posted 29 times worldwide, written my book, and built a social media following. I left my job as a teacher of 10 years after I felt the Lord pulling me to share my story and help others see there is more to life then the trauma they have experienced.
