Nephi is first and foremost a husband and father. In 2004, Synovial Sarcoma claimed then 17-year-old Danielle’s foot. Danielle felt a lack of purpose post amputation. She missed running and the strength she had previously found growing up as a soccer player. Nearly five years after amputation, Danielle took her first spin class and left that first class feeling alive and inspired to challenge herself athletically again. After participating in her first Challenged Athletes Foundation event, Danielle found strength in the CAF community and saw the endless possibilities that were available to her. She promised herself that she would race in her first triathlon. Danielle crossed the finish line in April 2011 with a standard walking prosthetic and a 30-year-old bike and she knew she had rediscovered her competitive spirit. Danielle has since been equipped with two running prostheses from CAF. She spent several years racing paratriathlons with the support of CAF- taking 1st at the 2011 US Paratriathlon National Championships before heading to Beijing and bringing home a Gold medal as a World Champion and earning a silver at 2012's World Paratriathlon Championships in Auckland. Four years ago, on the eve of her 10-year anniversary of surviving cancer, Danielle challenged herself to participate in CAF's Million Dollar Challenge. She became the first female adaptive athlete to ride every mile of MDC's 628 miles. In November 2018, Danielle again challenged herself- running her first marathon at the TCS New York City Marathon. Danielle finished in 3 hours and 50 minutes! She plans to run Boston Marathon in 2020. Danielle’s experience as a cancer survivor and amputee has pushed her to a career in healthcare where she works on a daily basis to make an impact in improving healthcare for patients, working as an administrator at UC San Diego Health.

On the way up, I became a certified Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) trainer. NLP is simply the study of the language of your mind and the minds of others. It lets you listen via verbal and non-verbal language in to what’s underneath what a prospect or customer says, throwing open relationship doors and exploding sales. I left Silicon Valley for Grand Rapids, Michigan to spend the final years of their lives with both my parents. While there, I was the executive director of a non-profit under the Office of the Surgeon General and Homeland Security. One or the most meaningful jobs of my life, medical professionals were trained to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies like 9/11, Katrina and school shootings. I’ve been living in Reno, the Biggest Little City In The World, with my husband and two rescued cats for the past eight years. I loved college, where I became a dancing, Spanish-speaking engineer who paints. And art has remained my favorite hobby, today in the form of knitting and crocheting, tangling with Zentangle™, and playing with colored pencil, charcoal, and acrylics. I’m also an expert at “Moulage,” or blood, guts, and gore makeup; it’s an outlet for expressing my dark side. I served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam war. They promised me everything, gave me a typewriter, and sent me to Guam! There, I was decorated for my work during the fall of Saigon in 1975. Before leaving the Air Force, I had the privilege of painting an 11′ x 9′ mural for the press room to honor the “Female Introductory Pilot Program”. Women would finally be allowed to pilot airplanes in the Air Force – cargo planes. How far we have come – women were finally able to pilot jets in 1993! When people ask me about the things I’ve done, my life experiences, I tell them that I’m “living all my past lives out loud now,” here in this lifetime! Someone recently asked me if there’s anything I cannot do. I said that my final frontier is to ride a horse. I know one is waiting for me on this summer’s horizon.

Edward Varner has been an educator, musician, percussionist, actor, and arts education specialist and advocate for more than 30 years. Jessica Blank is a writer, director, actor, and story consultant who trains leaders, candidates and organizations to harness the power of story. Her deep background in theater, film, and television as both creator and performer, and her award-winning work at the intersection of the arts and social change, have served as a laboratory to study how story can connect, inspire and motivate prosocial action. Jessica is a Professor in the Graduate Drama Department at the Juilliard School and the Graduate Film Program at NYU/Tisch. She has worked closely on story projects with organizations including the Center for Constitutional Rights, the ACLU, the ADL, Southern Poverty Law Center, the Innocence Project, Amnesty International, the Center on Wrongful Convictions, Campaign for Civilians in Conflict, Witness to Innocence, Coal River Mountain Watch, and the IRC. She works as a consultant on story strategy for progressive candidates, nonprofit organizations, and foundations; leads organizational trainings in story literacy; and trains and coaches leaders and changemakers to use the power of story to radically uplevel their impact. As a story and performance coach, she works with TV showrunners, Sundance-supported filmmakers, Off-Broadway playwrights, published novelists and Broadway actors. She has taught writing and speaking to veterans, wounded veterans’ caregivers, formerly incarcerated individuals, death row exonerees, and at numerous colleges and universities, and is a frequent panelist and speaker on story and social change.
