Biography Lacey Rae Cannon is a community leader with Cherokee heritage and a nationally recognized practitioner in Indigenous ecological restoration, food sovereignty, and land-based education. She is a descendant of the Wild Potato Clan from the Owl’s Nest community near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Raised on Whidbey Island, Washington, she grew up learning practical land-based skills including gardening, gathering shellfish, herbal medicine, and wood harvesting. These early experiences shaped her lifelong relationship to land stewardship, resilience, and hands-on leadership. Cannon later married into the Waipuk Clan of the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians and is the mother of two Kumeyaay children. After marrying into the clan, she spent a decade working in the music industry while studying business administration, building skills in leadership, marketing, and strategic planning that she later applied to community-based and nonprofit work. For more than seven years, she trained under respected Kumeyaay ethnobotanist Dr. Richard Bugbee, deepening her knowledge of traditional ecological knowledge, native plant systems, and cultural land stewardship practices. In 2017, she founded Indigenous Regeneration, a tribally led nonprofit dedicated to restoring ecosystems, strengthening food sovereignty, and supporting Indigenous cultural knowledge transmission. She also co-established the Richard Bugbee Land Relationship Center with her teacher and leads the Paradise Tribal Farm School, a living education site focused on hands-on land stewardship and intergenerational knowledge sharing.
